The talented trio of pianist/clarinetist Tom Ranier, bassist Chuck Berghofer, and drummer Ray Brinker, will be joined by vocalist Anna Mjoll, to perform a choice selection of be-bop, cool, and west coast jazz tunes from the vast library of jazz standards, classics, and originals of the Great American Songbook. Multi- instrumentalist Tom Ranier, was inspired by the music of Benny Goodman and Charlie Parker. Tom has been prominent in the Film, T.V. and Music recording industry since the 1970’s, playing keyboards, woodwinds, and writing music extensively for the Grammys, Academy Awards, Emmys, and Golden Globe winning media and soundtracks for many top artists like Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Michael Feinstein, Christina Aguilera, Joe Pass, Placido Domingo, Barry Manilow, Natalie Cole, and many others. Tom has worked with musicians Dave Pike, Pete Christlieb, John Heard, Sherman Ferguson, Terry Gibbs, Buddy DeFranco, George Coleman, Lew Tabackin, Eddie Daniels, Lanny Morgan, Carl Saunders, Abe Laboriel, Chuck Berghofer, Harvey Mason, Paul Kreibich, Luther Hughes, Ron Eschete, Glenn Cashman, Bob Cooper, Jimmy Mosher, Pat Senatore, Roger Neumann, Gabe Baltazar, Tom Talbert, Andy Martin, Tony Rizzi, Demetri Pagaldis, and many others.
Tom has written and played on numerous T.V. shows, for Disney, and CBS, and states studio work keeps him fresh and a better musician with a broader scope. Ranier currently tours with vocal great, Tony Bennett, and as a pianist and jazz artist, Tom’s personal approach mixes Bud Powell’s complexities, Oscar Peterson’s swing, Bill Evans’ harmonies, and Chick Corea’s melodies. Tom cites composer and arrangers Michel Legrand, Nelson Riddle, and Eddie Sauter as influences for orchestral writing. Ranier has taught at Fullerton College and with Kenny Burrell at UCLA. Tom has authored a book “Piano in the Rhythm Section”. Ranier has recorded 8 albums as a leader/co-leader, and has appeared on over 275 recordings in his career.
Bassist Chuck Berghofer, known for his huge, rich tone on the instrument, has worked as a studio musician and in the film industry since the 1960’s. Berghofer was in Shelly Manne’s House Band at Shelly’s Manne-Hole Jazz Club in Hollywood, and as the house bassist at Donte’s Jazz Club in Los Angeles, both for several years. Berghofer has worked with many jazz greats that include Ralph Pena, Skinny Ennis, Bobby Troup, Pete Jolly, Nick Martinis, Jack Sheldon, Conte Condoli, Zoot Sims, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Bob Cooper, Frank Rosolino, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Philly Joe Jones, Frank Capp, Herb Ellis, Jan Lundgren, Shelley Berg, Howard Roberts, Andy Martin, Joe La Barbera, John Proulx, and numerous others. Chuck has accompanied many top vocalists like Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Seth McFarlane, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Glen Campbell, the Everly Brothers, Elvis Presley, Buddy Greco, Keely Smith, Rosemary Clooney, and a number of others. Berghofer has appeared on over 400 film soundtracks, on over 500 recordings, and was awarded the Most Valuable Bass Player 4 consecutive years by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Chuck is known for his bass part on Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walkin”, and on the T.V. show “Barney Miller”. Berghofer performed on Barbra Streisands’s film “Funny Girl”, and was a member of the famous studio band, “The Wrecking Crew”. Chuck credits bassists Leroy Vinegar, Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, Scott LaFaro, and Red Mitchell as influences. Berghofer recently toured with jazz vocal great, Tony Bennett, and has toured with many other top jazz vocalists.
Drummer Ray Brinker is very active on the L.A. Jazz and Studio scene. A graduate of North Texas State University, Brinker was a member of the Grammy nominated 1 0’Clock Lab Band. Ray has toured with over a dozen world class artists that include Maynard Ferguson, Pat Benatar, and Tierney Sutton, with whom Brinker is a 23 year member of the 5-Time consecutively Grammy nominated Tierney Sutton Band. Brinker has co-arranged and recorded 10 CDs for the Tierney Sutton Band, and Ray is also a member of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Ray has performed/recorded/toured with over 40 top diverse artists, including, with Ray Charles on his 8-Time Grammy award winning Album of the Year, “Genius Loves Company”. Brinker has performed on a dozen Film/T.V. projects, which include writing, arranging, and performing the score for Clint Eastwood’s film, “Sully”. Ray Brinker has over 150 recording credits in his career.
Singer/songwriter Anna Mjoll, from Iceland, comes from a musical family. Her mother is Olafur Gaukua, a singer and model, and her father, Svanhildur Jakobsdottir is a radio program director. Anna has appeared in Iceland on numerous T.V. shows, on Eurovision, toured with singer Julio Iglesias for 3 years. and has written 3 songs with C.J. Vanston for the film, “For Your Consideration”. Anna’s CD, “The Shadow of Your Smile” was recorded with jazz artists Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Carpenter, Don Grusin, Neil Stubenhaus, and Luis Conte, and was voted one of the top 5 female jazz vocal CDs and she was voted one of the top 5 jazz singers of the year. Anna Mjoll’s singing evokes influences of Peggy Lee, Astrud Gilberto, and Blossom Dearie, with her personal interpretations of a song and a style all her own.
