About The John Bolivar Quartet

On Thursday October 30th at 7:30pm saxophone extraordinare John Bolivar will lead an outstanding quartet of musicians to perform music of great jazz saxophone masters at Pete Carlson’s 2014-2015 season Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series opening concert. The group will consist of John Bolivar on saxophones, Barney McClure on acoustic piano, David Enos on acoustic bass, and Quintin Dennard on drums. This amazing quartet will pay homage to the timelessness of the musical contributions made by some of the greatest saxophonists that have altered the course of jazz history.

The music of saxophone legends to be honored will be tributes to Charles Lloyd, Dexter Gordon, James Moody, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter, Gene Ammons, Oliver Nelson, George Coleman, and Gato Barbieri. This will be the 2nd concert John Bolivar’s group has performed recognizing great jazz saxophonists. Last season Bolivar’s group performed musical tributes to the great Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, and Stanley Turrentine. This years concert promises to be entertaining, educational, and enjoyable by any lover of great jazz.

John Bolivar, a gifted musician will showcase his virtuosity and exceptional talent sharing his loving spirit of this music. Bolivar, a consummate professional has performed and traveled with many top jazz, pop, and blues artists all over the world including Aretha Franklin, Chuck Mangione, B.B. King, Prince, Lou Rawls, Herb Alpert, Jimmy Smith, Lalo Schifrin, Brian Wilson, Johnny Rivers, Little Anthony and the Imperials, and many more. John has played festivals, on live stage, TV, film, and currently lends his skills and time to teach jazz improvisation to the local Boys and Girls Club Heatwave Jazz & Show Band. Keyboardist Barney McClure’s list of credits reads like a who’s who of jazz. His credentials are numerous and plentiful. Barney has performed and recorded with international artists like Ernestine Anderson, Jimmy Witherspoon, Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, Bud Shank, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Sonny Stitt, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Shorty Rogers, Milt Jackson, Billy Higgins, Jeff Hamilton, Bob Hope, Steve Allen and many more.

Barney is a multitalented composer, arranger, author, instructor, notator, civic leader, and can be heard in 2 movies, “Officer and a Gentleman”, and “Mr. Hollands Opus”. David Enos, an accomplished in-demand live performer and sought-after session player will provide the pulse as one of todays’ premier bass players. Enos is at home in Jazz, Fusion, Progressive Rock, or Blues. He has worked with preeminent artists like Arturo Sandoval, David Benoit, Barbara Morrison, and Alfonse Mouzon.

Currently Enos is on the faculty of the California College of Music in Pasadena and has had success helping his students develop into live performers by centering on a teaching style that focuses on discipline, practicality, versatility, and innovation. Drummer Quintin Dennard also on the faculty of CCM, will provide his wonderfully rhythmical style that will keep the music flowing with endless vigor and energy.

Dennard, a native of Detroit has delivered his powerful uplifting playing for many prominent artists in Jazz, R&B, and Soul. He has accompanied Diana Ross and the Supremes, Dionne Warwick, and the Temptations. He has had a special bond playing with John Bolivar for many years. Quintin always brings a fun loving feel to the bandstand with his impeccable touch and timing. Look for this evening of music to be memorable, full of joy, inspiration, and beauty with a real taste of originality by a talent laden group.
