DESCRIPTION:This all-star group includes Kelly Jocoy on drums\, Peter Sprague on guitar\, Tripp Sprague on saxophone & flute\, Mike Wofford on piano\, Darek Oles on bass\, Tommy Aros on percussion\, and Allison Adams Tucker on vocals. \nL.A. drummer Kelly Jocoy started out in San Diego in high school playing with Peter & Tripp Sprague\, Rob Schneiderman’s “Manzanita Group”\, John Leftwitch\, Mark Lessman\, Nathan East\, and Tommy Aros. Kelly has been part of Peter Sprague’s “Dance of the Universe” orchestra group that included Hollis Gentry\, Jeff Rue\, and Butch Lacy. Kelly has been part of the San Diego dance band “The People Movers”\, and has been spreading the jazz word on the LA and Del Mar music scene. Kelly has made a superb jazz recording entitled “Verities” that includes the members of this live performance. \nGuitarist Peter Sprague is a composer\, arranger\, recording engineer\, producer\, musical transcriber\, and life-long surfer. Peter plays many genres of music which include jazz\, classical\, Latin\, folk\, rock\, and pop. Peter possesses world-class ability following the guitar lineage of great guitarists such as Joe Pass\, Joe Diorio\, Anthony Wilson\, and Pat Metheny. Peter comes from a talented\, artistic family. His mom was known for playing a great rendition of the “Saint Louis Blues”\, and his father was a spirited drummer who tried to emulate Philly Joe Jones. His sister is a world-class dancer and choreographer\, and his brother is a wonderful woodwinds player. His parents were tolerant and loving\, and encouraged him to take music lessons as well as surfing when he could. Peter began playing the guitar at age 12\, and enjoyed the music of the Beatles “Revolver” album\, the music of Jimmy Hendrix\, and Crosby\, Stills\, and Nash. His dad introduced him to Miles Davis often playing the bongos to Miles Davis album “Miles Ahead” for hours. Peter then listened to the music of Benny Carter\, Stan Getz\, and was truly intrigued when he heard John Coltrane playing the ballad “Dear Old Stockholm”. He also remembers listening to Blood\, Sweat\, & Tears\, and through these various exposures began to pursue jazz. He studied with Bill Coleman and Steve O’Connor\, and his close jazz music friends also studied with great teachers. At UCSD Peter learned the music of Charlie Parker\, and Wynton Kelly\, and then formed the “Minor Jazz Quintet” (all group members were under the age of 21). Peter then attended the Interlochen Arts Academy\, where he learned Coltrane’s secret to get good (practice & practice). Peter was also moved by the music of Chick Corea\, and worked at decoding his piano music. Peter studied with Madam Chaloff\, and Albin Czak in Boston\, and it was there where guitarist Pat Metheny encouraged Peter to play with a more looser style\, and develop his own sound. When he returned to San Diego Peter established the Dance of the Universe orchestra\, studied and played Chick Corea’s “Light as a Feather”\, followed spiritualist Ram Dass’ “Be Here Now”\, and practiced Ashtanga Yoga. Peter next began to play with saxophonist Charles McPherson\, and recorded four records on the Xanadu label. He next recorded two albums for Concord Records with Steve Kujala\, Bob Magnusson\, and Peter Erskine. Chick Corea was a big influence on him\, and Peter was invited to play with Chick\, Al Jarreau\, Herbie Hancock\, Roger Williams\, Wayne Shorter\, Hubert Laws\, Victor Feldman\, and John Pattituci. Peter worked on organizing Chick Corea’s music into a book form for publishing. Because he could accurately transcribe music books\, he was invited by Chick to direct\, and arrange the classic tune “Spain” on the GRP All-Star Band recording. Peter has taught for over 30 years which includes at The Musician’s Institute\, The Cal Institute of Arts\, and the UCSD Jazz Camp. He also gives workshops for young\, aspiring jazz musicians. Peter has toured Argentina where he shared the music of Charlie Parker\, and has produced 10 songbooks including transcriptions of the music of Charlie Parker\, Sonny Rollins\, McCoy Tyner\, and assorted jazz solos. Peter has played the Brazil Jazz Festival\, and with Hubert Laws and Billy Childs\, and the San Francisco Orchestra. Peter formulated the group Brazil Jazz\, and played 3 years with jazz greats David Benoit\, Eric Marienthal\, Russ Ferrante\, Jimmy Haslip\, Alex Acuna\, and Ivan Lins. Peter established Sprague Land Recording Studio which records all types of music. Peter has also headed the group “Blurring the Edges”\, and founded his own record company SBE (Strivin to Break Even). Peter has played with over 150 jazz artists\, and composed and performed for the Grossmont and San Diego Symphonies. He has also performed at the Lincoln Center\, and toured with vocalist Diane Reeves. Peter received a grant and was commissioned by Chamber Music America to compose and perform “Dr. Einstein’s Spin”. Peter has developed his own original twin neck guitar\, founded the Peter Sprague String Consort\, and been the leader of 23 recordings. In total he has played on over 190 recordings. Peter has received multiple San Diego Best Jazz Artist awards\, and received numerous grants from San Diego. He received the San Diego Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. \nSaxophonist and flutist Tripp Sprague also plays the harmonica\, and the electronic woodwind instrument (EWI). Like his brother Peter\, Tripp has played with most of the top jazz musicians in the San Diego area\, and also operates a recording studio. Tripp has played with Mose Allison\, Smokey Robinson\, The Four Tops\, The Temptations\, and recorded on numerous CDs\, with artists including Kim Carnes and Todd Rundgren. Tripp co-produced and recorded “Blurring the Edges”\, and received Best Pop Jazz Album at the San Diego Music Awards. He has also recorded on ‘Wall to Wall”\, a straight ahead jazz project. Tripp is part of a group called “Common Chords” that works to help middle and high school students write music with other cultures to foster the next generation of intercultural cooperation and understanding. This group helps musicians from different genres of music\, cultures\, and religions to be musical collaborators that transports listeners to feed their soul\, and unlock their mind. The different types of music played are rock\, klezmer\, jazz\, bhangra\, Indian\, sufi\, and qawwali into one harmonious new hybrid sound\, creating the next generation of musical peace ambassadors. \nPianist Mike Wofford\, a native of Texas\, has lived and performed in the San Diego area for most of his life. He began playing the piano at the age of 7\, and was influenced by his mom who was a professional singer. At age 19 Mike entered into the LA jazz scene in the early 1960’s. He first broke in with the Lighthouse All-Stars\, and continued to play with many of the west coast jazz players including Teddy Edwards\, Art Pepper\, Red Norvo\, Chet Baker\, Bud Shank\, Zoot Sims\, Shorty Rogers\, Maynard Ferguson\, June Christy\, Mel Torme\, Gary Burton\, and Joe Pass. Mike oversaw the music for the Bill Cosby Show with Quincy Jones\, and worked with Oliver Nelson at Universal Pictures. Mike was an arranger for Capitol Records for Sergio Mendez\, Mike Barone\, Roger McGuinn of “The Byrds”\, John Lennon\, The Jackson 5\, Tom Scott\, Joan Biaz\, and Harry Nillson. Mike was in Shelly Manne’s jazz group for 16 years\, and worked with Lee Konitz\, Harry “Sweets” Edison\, and Benny Carter. Mike was musical director for Sarah Vaughn\, and Ella Fitzgerald\, and was the house pianist at San Diego’s “Elarios” and the “Horton Grand Hotel”. Mike has worked with dozens of other jazz greats\, has led his own trio\, quartet\, and has arranged the music of Jobim\, and Ellington and Strayhorn for string orchestras. Mike’s piano influences are many which include T. Monk\, H. Silver\, S. Clark\, H. Nichols\, D. Ellington\, J. Rowles\, R. Twardzik\, G. Gould\, B. Evans\, C. Taylor\, P. Bley\, and A. Tatum. Mike is a musicians’ pianist who inspires as he plays\, and as he absorbs what he hears develops his own sound. This is the very definition of a jazz musician. Mike has played on over 200 recordings as a sideman\, made 17 recordings as a leader\, won San Diego’s Lifetime Achievement Award\, and is the director of the Annual Oregon Coast Jazz Party in October. \nBassist and composer Darek Oles is a protégé of bassist Charlie Haden. Darek grew up in Poland\, and began playing music at the age of 5. He won numerous awards as a junior musician\, and toured with many of Poland’s best jazz groups. He has been performing over 20 years\, and is a member of the LA Jazz Quartet. Darek has played with Brad Mehldau\, Larry Koonse\, Peter Erskine\, Alan Pasqua\, Bob McChesney\, Kait Dunton\, and numerous jazz greats. Darek follows the musical lineage of Scott Lafaro\, Bill Evans\, Charlie Haden\, and Gary Peacock. Darek has played on over 100 recordings\, and performed in hundreds of concerts around the world. Some of Darek’s musical collaborations have received Grammy nominations. Darek was voted Poland’s Best Jazz Musician of the Year\, and voted Best Acoustic Bassist by “Jazz Forum”\, a European magazine. Darek has taught at Cal Institute of Arts\, UC Irvine\, and USC’s Thornton School of Music. \nTommy Aros is one of the most in demand percussionists based in the San Diego area. Tommy has played with Freddie Hubbard\, Al Dimeola\, David Benoit\, Dan Segel\, Mark Lessman\, Charo\, Trini Lopez\, Tom Barabas\, and has toured with Luis Miguel for over 20 years\, even playing in front of 105\,000 people in Mexico City. He has recorded on 7 of Luis Miguel’s CDs who has won 6 Grammy Awards. Tommy has also been a member of two popular groups\, Fattburger\, and Brasilia. Tommy plays a wide range of percussion instruments including the Gonpop California Conga’s\, tumba\, super tumba\, bongos\, and Gonpop timbales. Tommy is influenced by all percussionists which include Airto\, and Tito Puente. Tommy has toured internationally\, and regularly gives clinics in public schools. He has performed with many great jazz artists. \nSan Diego native Allison Adams Tucker is a multi-lingual jazz vocalist who began performing at the age of 5. Her background includes piano\, flute\, violin\, dance\, and vocals. She holds degrees in music and language. Her singing style ranges from acapella\, to Elizabethan madrigals\, to punk rock\, to country\, to commercial jingles\, and jazz. Allison sings in 6 different languages plus English\, and her music style is rhythmic\, melodic\, singing lyrics from Brazil\, Italy\, France\, Latin America\, Japan\, and the U.S. She has 3 recordings as a leader\, and has performed in Japan\, Europe\, Mexico\, and many venues in the U.S. Her style covers French Chanson\, vintage Argentine tango\, and classic jazz standards. She sings with a supple\, silky\, smooth sound that is light\, buoyant\, and crystal clear. She impresses with tasty nuances\, and a powerful\, perky\, upbeat style. Allison is soulful\, enchanting\, and sings with a rich purity that expresses an ease and imagination. Allison has impeccable pitch\, and truly sings music that comes from all corners of the world. She has played on 2 of Peter Sprague’s recordings\, and played with Josh Nelson\, Scott Colley\, Antonio Sanchez\, Chris Potter\, and many other talented musicians. Allison has also recorded on the “Saboteur” video game soundtrack.

DESCRIPTION:The group includes Graham Dechter on guitar\, Jeff Hamilton on drums\, Tamir Hendelman on piano\, and Mike Gurrola on bass. Guitarist Graham Dechter is a composer\, and arranger who has performed with the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra for 10 years. Graham’s influences include Wes Montgomery\, Barney Kessel\, Grant Green\, Herb Ellis\, Oscar Peterson\, Ray Brown\, and Ben Webster. Graham is an LA native who grew up with musical parents. His mother Maureen was involved in music theatre\, and his father Brad was a renowned orchestrater and composer who worked on over 250 film scores. At a young age Graham listened to Duke Ellington\, Count Basie\, and Nat King Cole. He studied classical violin and composition\, and credits bassist Marshall Hawkins of the Idyllwild Arts Academy as a big influence\, who played with Miles Davis\, Shirley Horn\, and Phineas Newborn Jr. From there Graham studied at Eastman School of Music for one year\, and then went on a world-wide tour with the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra for 8 years. Coming back to LA Graham studied with guitarist Larry Koonse\, and from there has recorded with Jeff Hamilton\, John Clayton\, Tamir Hendelman\, and Michael Buble. Graham has made two recordings as a leader\, and played on several TV shows\, and with dozens of jazz greats. Graham has a reverence for jazz guitar tradition\, whether its ballads\, bossa’s\, be-bop\, or blues Graham always plays with great intensity\, and perfect technique that makes him a formidable soloist and consummate accompanist. His style can be considered bluesy\, relaxed\, mature\, and sophisticated. Graham possesses great knowledge and ability\, and is a joy to hear. Graham really has it all\, the chops\, harmonic depth\, deep swing\, melodic inventiveness\, and serious arranging skills. \nJeff Hamilton is one of the most in demand drummers who plays with a versatile\, driving\, technical style that is full of superlatives. Jeff is an accomplished teacher\, arranger\, and composer who’s colorful work is sensitive\, sizzling\, seasoned\, and intelligent. Jeff plays at the highest standard\, and can be powerful yet soft\, understated\, and riveting. Jeff grew up in Indiana\, began playing at the age of 8\, and listened to big band and Oscar Peterson records. Jeff was influenced by Gene Krupa\, Buddy Rich\, Mel Lewis\, Philly Joe Jones\, and Shelley Manne. Jeff has worked with Tommy Dorsey\, Lionel Hampton\, Oscar Peterson\, Ray Brown\, The Clayton Brothers\, co-leads The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, Monty Alexander\, Woody Herman\, The LA Four\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Count Basie\, Rosemary Clooney\, Diana Krall\, Scott Hamilton\, Ernestine Anderson\, Gene Harris\, Michael Buble\, and dozens of jazz greats. Jeff won the LA Jazz Society Musician of the Year Award with John Clayton\, performed on Natalie Cole’s film “Unforgettable”\, and on Oscar Peterson’s documentary “Life in the Key of Oscar”. Jeff has recorded 12 CD’s as a leader\, and has appeared on over 200 recordings with a wide range of artists. \nAward winning pianist Tamir Hendelman has played with many jazz greats including Teddy Edwards\, John & Jeff Clayton\, Harry Allen\, Tierney Sutton\, Phil Upchurch\, Ricky Woodard\, Sandra Booker\, Barbara Morrison\, Oscar Brashear\, Bob Sheppard\, Nick Brignola\, Houston Person\, Bill Holman\, Julia Migenes\, Roberta Gambarini\, John Pizzarelli\, Gladys Knight\, Diana Krall\, Jackie Ryan\, Janis Mann\, Natalie Cole\, and Barbara Streisand. Tamir began playing at the age of 6\, and studied at the Anazagi Conservatory in Tel Aviv. Tamir won the Yamaha National Keyboard Competition at the age of 14\, and later performed in Japan and at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. He studied at the Tanglewood Institute\, and with Ron Carter and Lee Konitz at Eastman College where he earned his Bachelors’ Degree. Tamir has won awards from ASCAP\, and the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts. Tamir is musical director at the Lovewell Institute for Creative Arts\, and is a clinician for the Thelonious Monk Institute. Tamir has performed as a guest soloist at the Henry Mancini Institute. Tamir’s playing can be described as exhilarating\, intense\, sensitive\, introspective\, captivating\, hard swinging\, dynamic\, flawless\, versatile\, warm\, with a feather-like touch. Tamir has 2 CD’s as a leader\, and leads his own trio playing jazz standards\, Brazilian\, blues\, and Israeli roots music. Tamir teaches at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music\, and Azusa Pacific University. Tamir was influenced by Miles Davis\, Bill Evans\, Chick Corea\, Oscar Peterson\, and the classical composer Ravel. \nBassist Mike Gurrola is a main stay on the LA jazz scene. As a youth Mike studied at the LA County High School for the Arts\, and won competitions at the Berklee College of Music\, and Monterey Jazz Festival Annual School Competition. Mike received a scholarship to Berklee where he studied and played with drummer Terry Lynn Carrington. Mike played twice as the bassist with the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation Jazz Orchestra\, and has played at the North Sea Jazz Festival\, and the Kennedy Center. Mike has studied at the Colburn School of Music\, and was the recipient of LACHSA’s first Ray Brown Scholarship presented by Ray Brown’s widow Cecilia. This allowed Mike to study with bassist John Clayton who was a protégé of Ray Brown\, maintaining a lasting relationship. Mike began playing professionally in high school at jam sessions around LA night clubs\, and became a sideman with many jazz artists including Eric Reed\, Mary Stallings\, Jeff Hamilton\, Houston Person\, Benny Greene\, Larry Goldings\, Willie Jones III\, Harry Allen\, Jane Monheit\, Kenny Burrell\, and many others. Mike plays the bass with strength and humility\, and a well-rounded knowledge giving the musicians and the music respect. Mike has a big warm welcoming sound with perfect intonation\, and at a young age plays at a high level with creativity that is inspiring. Mike has played on 6 recordings and on various film soundtracks.

DESCRIPTION:The group includes Ramon Banda on drums\, Tony Banda on bass\, Francisco Torres on trombone\, Javier Vergara on saxophone & flute\, Chris Barron on piano\, and Leo Corona on percussion. The Original Banda Brothers have played for 24 years as the anchors of Pancho Sanchez Grammy Award winning Latin Jazz Group. The Banda Brothers are also creators of a hand crafted Shekeres “beaded gourd” percussion instrument. This instrument is a favorite of world leading percussionists. The Banda Brothers were commissioned by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. to create Shekere for their new exhibit entitled “Latin Jazz; La Combinacion Perfecta”. This bilingual exhibition explores the history\, cultural content\, musicians\, places\, instruments\, and dance aesthetics behind the development of this musical genre. This exhibit will be shown in 15 cities over a four year tour across the U.S. and Caribbean. These unique Shekeres will be available for purchase soon. The Banda Brothers grew up in the city of Norwalk and began performing at the ages of 5 and 7 years old. They learned to play traditional Mexican songs in a lively west Texas style\, and learned to play American standards\, classic Cha Cha’s\, and R&B music. The Banda Brothers merge Afro-Latin music with American jazz bringing insight and imagination to jazz and Latin originals and classics. \nTrombonist Francisco Torres has been the director of Grammy Award winning Pancho Sanchez Latin Jazz Group\, and been part of Grammy Award winning Claire Fischer Big Band\, and Grammy Award winning Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Francisco has produced several Pancho Sanchez recordings that have received 5 Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations for Best Latin Jazz Recording. Francisco has played on over 35 recordings with over 50 different groups. He has played on 5 film soundtracks\, and over a dozen TV and Award Shows. Francisco has played with 10 of LA’s best big bands\, and is an in demand clinician and guest artist. He is the director of S.C.S.B.O.A. All-Star High School Jazz Band. Francisco has arranged\, composed\, and been commissioned to write for several high school and university jazz big bands. Francisco helped Jose Rizo create and conceive Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars\, which is a collection of LA’s best Latin Jazz musicians. \nWoodwind specialist Javier Vergara\, and native of Mexico City doubles on saxophone and flute on a wide range of tunes. He has been a main stay with the Banda Brothers for over 20 years. His sound and energy is a bright spot for this group. \nKeyboardist Chris Barron is a composer\, arranger\, and educator who has played with the Banda Brothers for over 25 years. Chris doubles on acoustic piano and synthesizer\, and is heavily involved in music education in the LA area. Chris has created a music curriculum for youth K through 5th grades\, and teaches woodwind\, and horn sections at the LA College of Music. Chris is director of the Integrated Music Academy creating musicians one group at a time by Music Language Immersion. He is also music director of the Mariners Church. Chris has composed music for a PBS special\, and applies his multi-talented skills in nearly every aspect of music. Chris has worked with Michael McDonald\, Leon Ware\, Jimmy Haslip of the Yellow Jackets\, Chuck Negron\, Celia Cruz\, Jose Rizo’s Latin Jazz All-Stars\, and Pancho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band. DESCRIPTION:The trio includes Christian Jacob on piano\, Trey Henry on bass\, and Ray Brinker on drums. Pianist Christian Jacob\, a native of France\, is a co-leader\, arranger\, and pianist with the Tierney Sutton Band. The band has recorded 8 CD’s\, and Christian also performs as a solo artist\, leader\, arranger\, and conductor of big bands\, and symphonies around the world. He has even played for the King of Thailand. Christian began playing classical piano at the age of 4 influenced by composers Debussy and Ravel\, who had a universal harmonic influence on jazz. Around the age of 9 or 10 Christian discovered jazz\, and was particularly moved by the improvisational abilities of Oscar Peterson. Christian developed perfect pitch\, and learned what musical feel is through interpreting various musical pieces. Christian studied classical music\, and played jazz with different combos developing his own style. His first discovery on the piano was Dave Brubeck\, and later Oscar Peterson who played in a different dimension\, showing his classical techniques and personality. Christian realized Oscar played what he said and had fun doing it. Christian won first prize from the Paris Conservatory\, and taught at the French National Conservatory in Metz. Soon thereafter Christian went to America to study jazz at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. It was here where he learned the art of improvisation and developed his own personal style. Christian won the Oscar Peterson and Joe Zawinul Jazz Masters Awards\, The Great American Jazz Piano Competition\, and won Downbeat’s award for the Top Collegiate Jazz Soloist. He graduated from Berklee with Magna Cum Laude. He also taught at Berklee\, and worked with vibist Gary Burton. Next Christian toured with Maynard Ferguson’s Band for 8 months\, performing almost every day. It was exhausting\, educational\, inspirational\, and fun. It was his greatest learning experience. Maynard Ferguson presented Christian on Concord Records where he recorded 2 CD’s. Christian has performed and recorded with Phil Woods\, Airto\, Flora Purim\, Michael & Randy Brecker\, Miroslav Vitous\, Benny Golson\, Bill Holman\, Terje Gewelt\, Carl Saunders\, Franco Ambrosetti\, Tommy Smith\, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra\, and his own big band. Since the mid 90’s Christian has been a member of the Tierney Sutton Band with Trey Henry and Ray Brinker. They are a tight-knit group that play sophisticated\, refreshing arrangements with musical joy. The band has received 5 Grammy Nominations. Christian has also recorded with Swiss saxophonist Fritz Renold\, and was commissioned to lead two classical symphonies. He has also worked with the Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra\, and was director of the Lorraine Orchestra in Nancy\, Meurthe-et-Moselle\, composing their inaugural commission. Christian has made 3 trio recordings\, and is the musical director for Broadway legend and the musical theatre of Betty Buckley. Christian has appeared on over 60 recordings\, has made a solo piano recording\, and has toured Japan. Christian’s playing can be described as a post-bop modernist influenced by Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett. He plays crystalline melodies\, and expansive harmonies\, creating a dense\, polyrhythmic thicket overlaying two or more Latin grooves from which his music springs out and hurdles forward. Trombonist Andy Martin was raised in a musical family and began playing in his teenage years. He soon developed great technique and is considered today a world-class virtuoso. Andy has influenced countless young musicians\, and has been a guest artist\, and given clinics at numerous colleges and universities. Andy has been a leader/co-leader on 12 albums\, and has collaborated with jazz greats Carl Fontana\, Pete Christlieb\, Bobby Shew\, and Eric Marienthal. Andy has been a sideman with Stanley Turrentine and Horace Silver. He has also had a long time association with British band leader Vic Lewis. Andy has been the lead or featured trombone soloist with nearly every LA jazz big band which includes\, currently with Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band\, 15 years with Bill Holman’s Big Band\, and the big bands of Tom Kubis\, Jack Sheldon\, Louie Bellson\, Quincy Jones\, Matt Cattingub\, Bob Curnow\, Patrick Williams\, Sammy Nestico\, and the Capp/Pierce/Juggernaut. Andy has played on numerous commercial recordings\, on over 150 major TV and motion picture soundtracks\, and live theatre. He has worked all of the major awards shows which includes the Grammy’s\, the Emmy’s\, the Academy’s\, the Golden Globes\, and the Screen Actors Guild. Andy has played on “Dancing with the Stars”\, “American Idol”\, “Family Guy”\, “American Dad”\, and “King of the Hill”. In total Andy has played on over 240 recordings. \nSaxophonist Brian Scanlon began playing the woodwind instruments at the age of 8. Born in New York and a native of New Jersey\, Brian has been on the LA jazz scene for over 30 years. Brian studied with Ramon Ricker\, and received his Bachelor and Masters’ Degrees at Eastman School of Music. Brian toured with entertainer Ben Vereen for 14 years\, appeared on the Tonight Show Band for 5 years\, and toured with Doc Severinsen’s Band for 9 years. Brian also played with Buddy Rich for one year. Brian has worked with Tony Bennett\, Dizzy Gillespie\, B.B. King\, the LA Philharmonic\, Natalie Cole\, Maureen McGovern\, and recorded with Randy Newman and Rosemary Clooney. Brian has played with 9 different big bands\, and currently is a member of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Brian has worked on the films “Monsters Inc”\, “A Bugs Life”\, “Moulin Rouge”\, and “Analyze This”. Brian currently teaches at Pepperdine University\, and has played on over 50 recordings. \nMulti-instrumentalist Tom Ranier has worked in the film\, TV\, and music recording industry since the 1970’s. A native of Chicago Tom has recorded for Warner Brothers\, and Concord Records. Tom’s talents cover both the keyboards\, woodwind instruments\, and writing for the major award shows which include the Grammy’s\, Academy’s\, Emmy’s\, Golden Globes\, Disney\, and CBS. Tom has contributed to winning media and soundtrack awards for Barbara Streisand\, Shirley Bassey\, Michael Feinstein\, Christina Aguilera\, Joe Pass\, Placido Domingo\, Barry Manilow\, and Natalie Cole. Tom’s piano style mixes Bud Powell’s complexities\, Oscar Peterson’s swing\, blues\, and bravura\, Bill Evans chordal brilliance and exploratory harmonies\, and Chick Corea’s intricate and beautiful melodies. Tom was inspired by Benny Goodman at the age of 6\, and a recording with Charlie Parker with strings at the age of 7. Tom began the piano at the age of 10 studying classical\, and began the clarinet at the age of 12. After hearing Benny Goodman he wanted to play jazz. In high school he worked with his father Lou who was a musician\, and later studied with Jack Daugherty. Tom studied at Cal State Fullerton where he received his Bachelors’ Degree studying with Kalman Bloch on clarinet\, and Lloyd Rogers in composition. Tom studied piano with Earle Voorhies\, Craig Rees\, and John Crown. Tom completed his studies of composition at USC\, and Cal Arts. Tom has worked with Dave Pike\, Pete Christlieb\, Sherman Ferguson\, John Heard\, Terry Gibbs\, Buddy DeFranco\, George Coleman\, Lou Tabackin\, Eddie Daniels\, Lanny Morgan\, and many different bands. When Tom performs live music as an improviser he thinks and feels projecting what is deep within himself through the music. Tom enjoys studio work which helps him stay fresh and become a better musician because he works on different projects and with different composers that broadens his scope. Azar Lawrence began playing the drums\, violin\, piano\, and vocals at the age of 5. At the age of 11 he began playing the alto sax\, mentored by Mr. Shoemaker. He was also taught by his mother who was a classical pianist\, and when attending Dorsey High School was schooled by Herbert Baker. At the age of 17 he played with Clark Terry\, and Muddy Waters\, at the age of 19 he played with George Cables\, Candy Finch\, Larry Gales\, and Woody Shaw. From there he played with Ike and Tina Turner\, and at the age of 20\, joined Elvin Jones’ group. From there Azar replaced John Coltrane upon his death and played with the McCoy Tyner group for 5 years. Influenced by jazz man Horace Tapscott and Reggie Golson\, son of Benny Golson\, they together listened to the music of Coltrane\, Miles\, Monk\, and Shorter\, Azar also credits Sonny Rollins\, Arthur Blythe\, and Yusef Lateef as influences. Azar plays with great spirituality\, and has a distinctive sound that is full forced post be-bop. He plays with a deep virtuosity\, and expresses vivid ideas with a palpable texture in his sound. After working with McCoy Tyner Azar went on to play with Miles Davis\, Freddie Hubbard\, and Woody Shaw. Azar has played many styles of music including Afro/Cuban\, Avant Garde\, Latin\, modal\, modern creative\, and world fusion. Azar has worked with literally dozens of jazz greats\, and has also worked with Earth\, Wind\, & Fire\, Frank Zappa\, Busta Rhymes\, and with Marvin Gaye won a Grammy Award. Azar has made 10 CDs as a leader\, and has played on nearly 60 recordings in his career. Now in her 90’s Azar’s mother taught him “Music is your voice\, keep it pure and share your gift not for the fame or fortune\, but for the creator\, as it was given to you by him at no cost. If you should make a living from your gift then that’s just gravy.” Azar plays for mind\, body\, soul\, and the self. \nNolan Shaheed began playing the violin at age 12\, and soon after hearing Louis Armstrong made the switch to the trumpet. He enjoyed sports as much as music and became a track star in high school\, and would continue to excel as a world-class runner. In music Nolan was chosen to play on the All City High School and State Jazz Bands. Nolan soon became a world-class trumpeter\, and a world record holding masters athlete. He can blow your socks off in either endeavor. Nolan is a world record holder for his age group in the 800 meters\, 1 mile\, 1500 meters\, and 3000 meters in track and field. As a busy studio musician Nolan was Marvin Gaye’s musical director\, and has played with dozens of major artists including Count Basie\, Natalie Cole\, Stevie Wonder\, Diana Ross\, Phil Collins\, Anita Baker\, Carole King\, Tom Waits\, John Handy\, Aretha Franklin\, Eddie Harris\, Teddy Edwards\, Duke Ellington\, Lionel Hampton\, Jeannie and Jimmy Cheatham\, and Francisco Aquabella. Nolan follows in a long line of great trumpeters which include Clifford Brown\, Lee Morgan\, Freddie Hubbard\, Booker Little\, Harry “Sweets” Edison\, Bobby Bryant\, Snooky Young\, Oscar Brashear\, and Chuck Findley. Nolan has owned and operated a recording studio in Pasadena for the last 20 years making it affordable for local musicians to record. Nolan has great passion for recording other musicians and with his great energy loves to perform jazz the most\, striving for his best\, and enjoying to improvise from scratch. He is a member of Cal State LA Luckman Jazz Orchestra\, and is constantly busy in both playing and recording in the music industry. As an ageless and timeless athlete\, Nolan trains everyday four hours on the trumpet\, and two hours running and training. He follows a strict diet\, and says the key to maintaining good health and longevity is simple\, exercise and watch what you eat. He doesn’t expect to get sick\, but expects excellence in himself. Nolan says the more he runs the better he plays. \nPianist Theo Saunders is a composer\, arranger\, and virtuoso pianist who was born in Manhattan. Influenced by his Russian parents\, who were both actors\, Theo accompanied his mom on piano at many Broadway Show auditions. Theo attended Performing Arts High School\, and got the jazz bug listening to Miles\, Coltrane\, and Monk\, and went on to attend New York University. Theo performed there and in Boston\, Montreal\, Cincinnati\, LA\, and around New York City. Theo played with Jack De Johnette at the Village Van Guard\, played on Bill Evans & George Russell’s album “Living Time”\, played with Jerry Bergonzi’s “Conbrio” group\, with John Klemmer\, Ted Curson\, Willie Bobo\, Freddie Hubbard\, Carla Bley\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Mike Stern\, Sonny Fortune\, Bobby Matos\, and Azar Lawrence. Theo has directed 3 operas\, various dance\, cabaret\, and theatre performances. Theo has collaborated with artists George Herms\, poet David Meltzer\, and the Jazz Tap Ensemble. Theo has toured five continents\, played in over 25 countries with over 125 different musicians\, and over 35 different jazz festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs. Theo plays Latin\, R&B\, rock\, and jazz\, and has recorded 8 CD’s as a leader/co-leader. Theo has played on over 40 recordings as a sideman. One of Theo’s favorite quotes by Van Gogh is “Ignore the obvious\, and exaggerate the essential”. Theo approaches music with spontaneity\, and taking chances. He plays what he hears\, hears into the future as far ahead as possible so the future becomes the present\, the past is created linking it to the future\, in the present! \nBassist Henry Franklin\, affectionately known as “The Skipper” grew up in the heart of LA’s Central Avenue Jazz District. Influenced by his father who was a trumpeter and band leader Henry learned the clarinet\, piano\, tap dancing\, and studied with classical bassists. He was mentored by bassists Al McKibbon\, and George Morrow. Henry cites Paul Chambers and Doug Watkins as bass influences. Henry attended Manual Arts High School\, and first played with the Roy Ayers Latin Jazz Quintet. Henry played with Bill Henderson\, Carl Burnett\, Elmo Jones\, and was in the same company with Ornette Coleman\, Don Cherry\, Billy Higgins\, and Scott Lafaro. Henry’s big heroes are Harold Land\, and Hampton Hawes whom he toured and recorded 5 records with. Henry has played with Willie Bobo\, Archie Shepp\, Lamont Johnson\, Beaver Harris\, and Roswell Rudd. Henry played on the number one hit “Grazing in the Grass” with Hugh Masakela\, and played on Stevie Wonders gold record “Secret Life of Plants”. Henry has performed with dozens of jazz greats including O.C. Smith\, Gene Harris and the 3 Sounds\, Freddie Hubbard\, Bobbi Humphrey\, Count Basie\, Pharoah Sanders\, Azar Lawrence\, John Carter\, Bobby Bradford\, Dennis Gonzales\, Joe Williams\, Sonny Rollins\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Sonny Fortune\, and Milt Jackson. Henry has recorded 29 albums as a leader\, and played on over 100 in total of which many he produced. Henry was a mainstay performing at the Mission Inn in Riverside for 13 years\, and has authored a method book for bassists entitled “Basically Yours”. Henry always strives and works hard to do his best for jazz\, America’s only art form. \nDrummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith at 3 years old began playing the drums under the drumming influence of his father. Raised in Illinois Marvin graduated from the Berklee College of Music\, and began his career playing with jazz greats such as Jon Hendricks\, John Hicks\, Bobby Watson\, Slide Hampton\, Ray Brown\, Frank Wess\, Frank Foster\, Ron Carter\, Hank Jones\, and the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet. Marvin has recorded on over 200 albums\, and has 2 solo albums as a leader. Marvin has worked with Sting\, Dave Holland\, Sonny Rollins\, Willie Nelson\, Steve Coleman\, George Shearing\, the New York Jazz Quartet\, and literally hundreds of jazz musicians. Marvin played on the Tonight Show Band for 15 seasons with Kevin Eubanks and Jay Leno. Marvin is the drummer for Harry Connicks’ TV show “Harry”\, and has been a guest on the KLAC radio show “Loose Cannons”. Marvin has performed with over 25 different jazz groups\, and is a composer\, arranger\, clinician\, and conducts seminars and workshops. Marvin is on the staff of the Banff Center of Fine Arts in Canada\, and the “Drummers Collective” in New York City. Lolly’s musical influences are many which includes Cal Tjadar\, Milt Jackson\, Lionel Hampton\, Gary Burton\, Terry Gibbs\, Stan Getz\, Ellis Rigina\, Errol Garner\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Eddie Palmieri\, J. Coltrane\, C. Parker\, C. Adderley\, T. Monk\, F. Sinatra\, D. Ellington\, and N. Riddle. Lolly has performed with many jazz artists including Bob Mintzer\, Maria Schneider\, Hal Linden\, Charlie Shoemake\, Kristin Korb\, Larry Koonse\, Plas Johnson\, Jigs Whigham\, Kim Richmond\, Gary Smulyan\, Terry Gibbs\, Ricky Woodard\, and the Jazz Composers Alliance. Lolly has played many jazz clubs\, festivals\, and concerts both on the east and west coast. She has played the LA Jazz Societies Vibes Summit\, and at the World Vibes Congress. Lolly’s musical style is a mixture of Milt Jackson\, Walt Dickerson\, and Cal Tjader. Lolly has recorded one CD entitled “Allen Haz Funk”\, and will be releasing her second CD very soon. \nAward winning saxophonist Danny Janklow first played the sax at age 11\, and eventually did his schooling and graduated from Cal State Northridge. Danny is a multi-instrumentalist\, educator\, producer\, and composer who’s playing is soulful\, innovative\, melodic\, and swinging. Danny’s playing is both inspirational and passionate as he plays with an informed intellect and heart-felt spirit. Danny’s high energy style has taken him to Japan\, Holland\, and Mexico. Danny lists his influences as C. Parker\, C. Adderley\, J. Coltrane\, B. Evans\, O. Peterson\, Debussy\, Bach\, D’Angelo\, Radiohead\, and Roy Hargrove. Danny attended Agoura High School\, and was recognized by Wynton Marsalis as the first ever triple instrumentalist awarded Outstanding Soloist for saxophone\, flute\, and clarinet. Danny received a scholarship to Temple Universities’ School of Music\, and was mentored by Dick Oatts and Terell Stafford. Danny won first place in the North America Saxophone Alliance Competition in Georgia\, and won first place at the Detroit Jazz Saxophone Competition. Danny is an in-demand performer and band leader who has played several of the best jazz clubs on the east and west coast including at the Hollywood Bowl. Danny has taught at the Stanford University Jazz Camp\, and was semi-finalist in the T. Monk International Saxophone Competition in Washington D.C.. Jason won two consecutive Downbeat student music awards at Western Michigan University. Jason is a member of the eclectic band Homenaje\, and is a member of the Interfaith Jazz at Mount Olives Lutheran Church. Jason has worked with Tom Scott\, Kim Richmond\, Nick Mancini\, James Yoshiza\, Jonathan Rowden\, and Michael Cartwright. \nPianist Josh Nelson is an eclectic\, inspiring\, and brilliant virtuoso on the keyboards. A Southern California native Josh is a composer\, educator\, performer\, and recording artist. Josh’s style can be considered Urbane and Bluesy\, influenced by Oscar Peterson and Gene Harris. Josh has worked with Natalie Cole\, Anthony Wilson\, George Mraz\, Jeff Hamilton\, Richard Galiano\, Benny Golson\, Sheila Jordon\, Greg Hutchinson\, John Clayton\, Seamus Blake\, Matt Wilson\, Sara Garazek\, Dave Koz\, Joe Chambers\, Kurt Elling\, John Pizzarelli\, Lewis Nash\, Peter Erskine\, Tom Scott\, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson\, and Christian Howes. Josh has accompanied vocalist Sara Garazek for 10 years\, has taught at Soka University\, and Cal State Northridge. Josh’s background is a wealth of study and experience. He possess rare musical attributes which include versatility\, touch\, and a true sound of his own that is a clean-burning mode of jazz. \nDrummer Paul Kreibich began playing drums at an early age. He joined the school band at the age of 9\, and studied with Bobby Wrate at the age of 12. Paul became a drum major at Costa Mesa High School\, and soon was playing 5 nights a week on Balboa Island. Paul studied at Berklee School of Music\, and with Forest Clark at Orange Coast College. Paul spent 2 years with the Vince Wallace Quintet\, played in the Continental Circus\, and toured with vocalist Carmen McRae in Japan\, and throughout the U.S. including a stop at Carnegie Hall. Paul studied with Fred Gruber at LA City College\, and performed with the Ray Charles Band for 4 years. Paul has toured with Mose Allison\, Red Rodney\, Woody Herman\, Anita O’Day\, Jeff Hamilton\, Joe Pass\, Charles Brown\, Rosemary Clooney\, and Lee Konitz. Paul has played on over 60 recordings with literally hundreds of jazz greats. SUMMARY:Mike Wofford Quartet with Holly Hofmann
DESCRIPTION:The quartet includes Mike Wofford on piano\, Holly Hofmann on flute\, Marshall Hawkins on bass\, and Duncan Moore on drums. Pianist Mike Wofford\, a native of Texas\, has lived and performed in the San Diego area for most of his life. He began playing the piano at the age of 7\, and was influenced by his mom who was a professional singer. At age 19 Mike entered into the LA jazz scene in the early 1960’s. He first broke in with the Lighthouse All-Stars\, and continued to play with many of the west coast jazz players including Teddy Edwards\, Art Pepper\, Red Norvo\, Chet Baker\, Bud Shank\, Zoot Sims\, Shorty Rogers\, Maynard Ferguson\, June Christy\, Mel Torme\, Gary Burton\, and Joe Pass. Mike oversaw the music for the Bill Cosby Show with Quincy Jones\, and worked with Oliver Nelson at Universal Pictures. Mike was an arranger for Capitol Records for Sergio Mendez\, Mike Barone\, Roger McGuinn of “The Byrds”\, John Lennon\, The Jackson 5\, Tom Scott\, Joan Baez\, and Harry Nillson. Mike was in Shelly Manne’s jazz group for 16 years\, and worked with Lee Konitz\, Harry “Sweets” Edison\, and Benny Carter. Mike was musical director for Sarah Vaughn\, and Ella Fitzgerald\, and was the house pianist at San Diego’s “Elarios” and the “Horton Grand Hotel”. Mike has worked with dozens of other jazz greats\, has led his own trio\, quartet\, and has arranged the music of Jobim\, and Ellington and Strayhorn for string orchestras. Mike’s piano influences are many which include T. Monk\, H. Silver\, S. Clark\, H. Nichols\, D. Ellington\, J. Rowles\, R. Twardzik\, G. Gould\, B. Evans\, C. Taylor\, P. Bley\, and A. Tatum. Mike is a musicians’ pianist who inspires as he plays\, and as he absorbs what he hears develops his own sound. This is the very definition of a jazz musician. Mike has played on over 200 recordings as a sideman\, made 17 recordings as a leader\, won San Diego’s Lifetime Achievement Award\, and is the director of the Annual Oregon Coast Jazz Party in October. \nFlutist Holly Hofmann began playing at the age of 5\, and was influenced by her father who was a jazz guitarist. Holly learned standards from the Great American Songbook\, and after studying classical music for many years began to work with renowned jazz musicians like Ray Brown\, Frank Wess\, Cedar Walton\, and Kenny Barron. Holly studied with Cleveland orchestra flutist Maurice Sharp\, received her Bachelors’ Degree from Cleveland Institute of Music\, and her Masters’ Degree from University of Northern Colorado. Holly has played in the San Diego area since the late 1980’s and booked a National Jazz Series at the Horton Grand Hotel with artists like Diana Krall\, Tommy Flanagan\, Joe Henderson\, and Benny Carter. In the 1990’s Holly recorded and played with Bill Cunliffe\, Ray Brown\, and Victor Lewis. In 2001 Holly married Mike Wofford\, and has played in different musical formats with artists like Peter Washington\, Ali Ryerson\, Ben Riley\, and Terell Stafford. Holly was a member of the Flutology All-Star Sextet\, and has recently recorded with John Clayton\, Jeff Hamilton\, and Anthony Wilson. Holly’s playing has been described as having note perfect accuracy\, and in the moment fluidity. Holly gives Master classes at schools and universities\, and provides clinics in middle schools and high schools in the U.S.. Holly is on the board of directors at the Keynote Jazz Foundation\, has made 12 recordings as a leader\, and along with Hubert Laws is considered one of the premiere jazz flute players today. Holly is the standard by which the jazz flute is judged. \nBassist Marshall Hawkins is a multi-instrumentalist who also plays piano\, organ\, and drums. Marshall won honors for playing the upright piano at the age of 12\, and growing up in Washington D.C. began advancing in music very rapidly. Marshall played with Miles Davis’ Second Great Quartet that included Wayne Shorter\, Herbie Hancock\, and Tony Williams. Since 1985 Marshall has taught at the Idyllwild School of Music and Arts Academy. Since its inception Marshall has been the jazz department head and director of the Three Day Jazz in the Pines festival held in August. Marshall has played with the Harry Pickens Trio\, and has recorded 4 CDs as a leader. Marshall has played with Shirley Horn\, Roberta Flack\, Donny Hathaway\, the Manhattan Transfer\, Eddie Jefferson\, Richie Cole\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, and Pharoah Sanders. Marshall has played on 40 recordings in his career\, and is renowned by his music students. Teaching kids jazz is Marshall’s passion. Marshall has brought jazz to elementary school students\, and established a non-profit organization that educates young people in jazz. Marshall established the Seahawk Modern Jazz Orchestra that helps nurture young musicians to learn and perform jazz music. \nDrummer Duncan Moore is a percussionist who plays a wide range of music that includes jazz\, Latin\, rock\, and R&B. Duncan has worked as a studio musician and recorded jingles\, soundtracks\, and various projects. Duncan began playing the drums at the age of 8 in Iowa\, and majored in music at the University of Iowa under Tom Davis. He eventually moved to San Diego\, and has performed and recorded with nearly 100 national and local artists. Duncan is an instructor at Mira Costa College\, and UC San Diego\, teaches at jazz camps\, and gives clinics. Duncan has appeared on 120 recordings. \nSaturday April 8th at 7pm the Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet plays Pete Carlson’s. Theo played with Jack De Johnette at the Village Van Guard\, played on Bill Evans & George Russell’s album “Living Time”\, played with Jerry Bergonzi’s “Conbrio” group\, with John Klemmer\, Ted Curson\, Willie Bobo\, Freddie Hubbard\, Carla Bley\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Mike Stern\, Sonny Fortune\, Bobby Matos\, and Azar Lawrence. Raised in Illinois Marvin graduated from the Berklee College of Music\, and began his career playing with jazz greats such as Jon Hendricks\, John Hicks\, Bobby Watson\, Slide Hampton\, Ray Brown\, Frank Wess\, Frank Foster\, Ron Carter\, Hank Jones\, and the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet. Jeff has worked with Tommy Dorsey\, Lionel Hampton\, Oscar Peterson\, Ray Brown\, The Clayton Brothers\, co-leads The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, Monty Alexander\, Woody Herman\, The LA Four\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Count Basie\, Rosemary Clooney\, Diana Krall\, Scott Hamilton\, Ernestine Anderson\, Gene Harris\, Michael Buble\, and dozens of jazz greats. Jeff won the LA Jazz Society Musician of the Year Award with John Clayton\, performed on Natalie Cole’s film “Unforgettable”\, and on Oscar Peterson’s documentary “Life in the Key of Oscar”. Tamir has won awards from ASCAP\, and the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts. Tamir is musical director at the Lovewell Institute for Creative Arts\, and is a clinician for the Thelonious Monk Institute. Tamir has performed as a guest soloist at the Henry Mancini Institute. Tamir’s playing can be described as exhilarating\, intense\, sensitive\, introspective\, captivating\, hard swinging\, dynamic\, flawless\, versatile\, warm\, with a feather-like touch. Tamir has 2 CD’s as a leader\, and leads his own trio playing jazz standards\, Brazilian\, blues\, and Israeli roots music. Tamir teaches at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music\, and Azusa Pacific University. He has worked with Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Benny Golson\, James Moody\, and many jazz greats. Bill  has payed musical tributes to Bud Powell\, Oliver Nelson\, Paul Simon\, Oscar Peterson\, and wrote the score for Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s film “On the Shoulders of Giants”\, a homage to the professional basketball team\, the Harlem Rens\, and the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920’s and 1930’s. This film received the NAACP Image Award for Best Documentary\, and Bill’s recording was nominated for Best Album. Bill has written four jazz instructional books\, and received The LA Jazz Society Composer and Arranger Award. Bill has taught at College of the Arts\, Cal State Fullerton\, the Skidmore Jazz Institute\, the Vail Jazz Workshop\, Central State University\, the Hollywood Musicians Institute\, Cal State Northridge\, USC\, and Temple University. A native of Massachusetts\, as a youth\, Bill listened to music that had hip harmony and melody\, and enjoyed the music of the Fifth Dimension\, Bert Bacharach\, and Herb Alpert. Bill played in Rock ‘n’ Roll bands in college\, but after listening to jazz pianist Oscar Peterson\, Bill became a jazz player overnight. Bill studied with pianist Mary Lou Williams at Duke University\, and received his Masters’ Degree at Eastman School of Music. Bill won the 1989 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. Bill has worked with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, the Clayton Brothers\, Holly Hofmann\, Ray Brown\, Natalie Cole\, and the Joe LaBarbera Quintet. Bill is active as a composer and player in classical orchestras\, chamber groups\, choirs\, and any kind of jazz setting. He gives workshops\, clinics\, and is the composer in-residence for the All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena. Bill has won several “Downbeat” awards\, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, and from the New Zealand School of Music. Bill won the Philadelphia Jazz Composer Competition sponsored by the American Composers Federation. As a modern jazz mainstream player Bill is inventive\, melodic\, and soulful. Bill’s personality described by his peers is charming\, witty\, warm\, and humble. \nSaxophonist Brandon Fields has played in the Southern California area for the last 35 years. He has recorded four albums of his own\, has been a sideman with the funk band “Tower of Power”\, recording 16 albums\, and has been an eclectic artist with over 35 different groups. Brandon has played on 8 film scores\, and played on the recording of the 2002 Latin Jazz Album of the Year by Alejandro Sanz\, “Y Solo Se Me O Corre A Marte”. Brandon also played on the 2005 Grammy Award winning album by Ray Charles “Genius Loves Company”. Influenced by saxophonist Dave Sanborn\, Brandon has toured with George Benson\, Kenny Loggins\, the Rippingtons\, Earth\, Wind\, & Fire\, and Dave Weckl. \nTrumpeter Kye Palmer is a long time LA studio player who played with Kevin Eubanks band of the “Tonight Show” for four years. Kye has played on several Grammy Award nominated and winning projects over the last 20 years. Kye attended the Stan Kenton Band Clinic as a youth\, and studied at University of Redlands\, Cal State Long Beach\, and Fullerton College. Kye has received the “Downbeat” Award for the winning “Time Tripping”\, and also played classical Bach music at Cal Poly Pomona. Kye has studied with Bobby Shew\, and Charlie Shoemake\, and is one of their students who really understands the music. Kye cites Clifford Brown and Freddie Hubbard as his trumpet influences. Kye has worked with Woody Herman\, Chris Walden\, Lee Ann Rimes\, Bob Dylan\, Tony Bennett\, Tom Jones\, Joe Williams\, Seal\, Diane Schuur\, Stanley Clarke\, Helen Reddy\, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, Pancho Sanchez\, Kurt Elling\, Ray Charles\, Diana Krall\, Gordon Goodwin\, Arturo Sandoval\, Johnny Mandel\, Emil Richards\, and many others. Kye has worked on TV shows with Jay Leno\, David Letterman\, Good Morning America\, the Today Show\, Late Night with Conan O’Brian\, the HR Big Band\, the Hollywood Studio Symphony Orchestra\, many TV shows\, and commercial jingles. Kye has played on 10 film scores\, and recorded on the Brian Seltzer Orchestra Grammy Award winning “Caravan”. Kye has taught at USC\, Cal State Fullerton\, Riverside City College\, North Florida State\, Memphis University\, Mount San Antonio College\, and currently is a faculty member of Bob Cole’s Conservatory of Music at Cal State Long Beach. Kye has authored jazz trumpet improvisation articles for “International Trumpet Guild”\, and has played on 23 recordings. \nTrombonist Francisco Torres is an arranger\, composer\, educator\, and musical director for Pancho Sanchez. Francisco has worked with Gordon Goodwin\, John Beasley\, Claire Fischer\, and has been part of several Grammy Award winning records. Francisco has been on five nominations for Grammy and Latin Grammy Best Latin Jazz Album. Francisco has played on over 50 recordings with over 50 different groups. He has played on 5 film scores\, with 10 different LA big bands\, and on many TV and award shows. Francisco is the director of the SCSBOA High School All-Star Band. Francisco has been commissioned to compose for high schools and universities\, and with many of LA’s best Latin jazz musicians\, helped Jose Rizo create and conceive “Jazz on the Latin Side All-Star Band”. \nBassist John Belzaguy has been a sideman on 35 recordings. He has played with the Latin jazz group “Yoboso”\, Fred Hersch\, Howard McGee\, and many southern California vocalists and jazz groups. John was influenced by bassist Paul Chambers and Percy Heath. John is a solid\, experienced accompanist who is comfortable to play with diverse musical artists. \nDrummer Ray Brinker received his Bachelors’ Degree from North Texas State University\, and was a member of the Grammy Award nominated “One ‘o’ Clock Lab Big Band”. Ray has toured with Maynard Ferguson\, and is a founding 23 year member of Tierney Sutton’s Band. Ray has co-arranged and recorded 10 CDs and has been a part of 5 Grammy nominations for Best Vocal Jazz Album. Ray received a Grammy nomination as a co-arranger for Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist. Ray plays in the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band\, and has played as a sideman with over 30 different musical groups that includes jazz\, pop\, and rock. Ray has played on 11 TV/film projects\, and co-wrote\, arranged\, and performed the music score for Clint Eastwood’s 2016 film “Sully”. \nPercussionist Joey De Leon has worked with Pancho Sanchez\, Gordon Goodwin\, and Arturo Sandoval. He has studied Bach classical percussion at the Manhattan School of Music\, and received Most Outstanding Musicianship Award. Joey has been street trained on the timbales and hand drums\, and has played with Francisco Aguabella\, Alex Acuna\, Dean Brown\, Robbie Williams\, Al McKay\, Strunz & Farah\, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra\, Joan Sebastian\, Juan Gabriel\, Chante Moore\, Al Jarreau\, Queen Latifah\, and is co-music director of the Lucky Seven Mambo Dance Band. Joey has been influenced by drummers Steve Gadd\, Vince Colaiuta\, Fred Hinger\, James Preiss\, Peter Erskine\, Giovanni Hildago\, All New York Latin Percussion Heavyweights\, Igor Stravinsky\, Jaco Pastorious\, Kenwood Dennard\, and his parents and friends.
