DESCRIPTION:World class piano virtuoso\, practicing psychiatrist\, and medical school teacher\, Dr. Denny Zeitlin\, is the worlds most visible renaissance man. Zeitlin has recorded over 35 critically acclaimed albums\, has written more than 100 original compositions\, has twice won first place in the Downbeat International Jazz Critics Poll\, has written original music for T. V.’s “Sesame Street”\, has appeared on Network T. V.\, including the “Tonight Show”\, “CBS Sunday Morning” and has presented his lecture – demonstration “Unlocking The Creative Impulse: The Psychiatry of Improvisation” across the U. S. and Europe. Denny has performed concerts throughout the U.S.\, Canada\, Japan\, and Europe with dozens of jazz greats at many top venues. Born in Chicago\, Zeitlin is the son of parents who were involved in medicine and music. Denny began playing the piano at the age of two\, studied classical music through elementary school\, and began playing jazz professionally through high school\, and in his college and medical school years. Denny’s jazz piano influences were George Shearing Billy Taylor\, Bud Powell\, Lenny Tristano\, Horace Silver\, Thelonious Monk\, Art Tatum\, George Russell\, and he assimilate the music of Bill Evans\, and Ornette Coleman\, developing his own original\, unique style of playing piano. Zeitlin graduated from the University of Illinois Phi Beta Kappa\, and received his M. D. from John Hopkins Medical School. Active in two professions\, Denny plays concerts\, maintains his private psychiatric practice in San Francisco and Marin county\, and is an awarding winning clinical Professor of Psychiatry at University of California\, San Francisco. Recording since the early 1960’s\, Zeitlin’s discography includes many jazz trio and solo piano albums as well as pioneering the integration of jazz\, electronic\, classical\, and rock music with multiple recordings. Denny composed the Original Soundtrack for the film “Invasion of the Body Snatchers. In recent years\, Zeitlin has focused on acoustic music in a multitude of settings\, continuing to compose\, record\, and tour internationally. In the U. S. Denny continues to play live dates in front of enthusiastic audiences\, and make new creative recordings showcasing his mastery of jazz piano improvisation. \nMaking his third appearance at the Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series\, Zeitlin will explore the music of George Gershwin. The Gershwin brothers were two of the greatest songwriters of the early 20th century.  George Gershwin’s compositions spanned both popular and classical genres. His most popular melodies are widely known\, and have been performed and recorded by countless artists for nearly a century.  Among Gershwin’s best known works are his orchestral compositions “Rhapsody in Blue”\, and “An American in Paris\, the songs “Swanee”\, “Fascinating Rhythm”\, “I Got Rhythm\, and the opera “Porgy and Bess”\, which spawned the hit “Summertime”.  Dozens of Gershwin’s most well known songs are an integral part of the Great American Songbook. In his life\, Gershwin wrote over 500 songs\, composed 10 compositions for orchestra\, 2 compositions for solo piano\, 2 operas\, 19 Broadway and London musicals\, 5 original film scores\, received an Academy award nomination\, received the Congressional Gold Medal\, received the Pulitzer Prize\, received the George and Ira Gershwin Lifetime Musical Achievement Award from UCLA\, was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame\, and had a Theatre\, a Hotel\, a School\, and Line Ship Deck named after him.\nExploring Gershwin’s giant contribution to American music is part of Denny Zeitlin’s continual creative output that he has played over the past 50 years that you will hear in a live performance that places him at Jazz’s creative zenith.

DESCRIPTION:Andy Martin is an L.A. based recording and performing trombonist.  Coming from a musical family\, Andy developed his technique and virtuosity on the trombone as a teen\, and has gone on to influence  countless young players and appear at many colleges and universities as a guest artist and clinician.  A world class musician\, Martin has recorded 12 albums as a leader/co-leader\, appeared on 300+ recordings as a sideman\,  has been heard on 150 major motion picture soundtracks\, and continues to be the paramount trombonist in L. A. today.  As a world class educator\, Andy teaches at his own private studio and gives personal insights on the technical mastery of the trombone\, and perspective on the entertainment industry\, improvisation\, recording techniques\, and much more.  Martin has collaborated with Carl Fontana\,  \n     Pete Christlieb\, Bobby Shew\, Eric Marienthal\, Stanley Turrentine\, Horace Silver\, Vic Lewis\, Gordon Goodwin\, Tom Kubis\, Bill Holman\, Jack Sheldon\, Louie Bellson\, Quincy Jones\, Matt Cattingub\, Bob Curnow\, Patrick Williams\, Sammy Nestico\, Frank Capp\, among others. Alex has played or recorded with Maynard Ferguson\, Woody Herman\, Tom Kubis\, Bob Florence\, Gordon Goodwin\, and multiple dozens of diverse musical artists. Iles has played in numerous Broadway Show Orchestras\, at the Academy Awards\, the Emmys\, Golden Globes\, and Peoples’ Choice Awards.  Alex has played on 100’s of T.V. and Film Soundtracks\, dozens of recordings\, and has played with the N.Y. Philharmonic\, the Long Beach Symphony\, the L.A. Philharmonic\, the L.A. Chamber Orchestra\, the Opera Pacifica\, the Pacific Symphony\, the Pasadena Symphony\, and the Santa Barbara Symphony.  Iles has appeared at many schools and organizations as a recitalist\, guest soloist\, and clinician. Grammy award winning pianist\, composer\, arranger\, and educator Bill Cunliffe has recorded 25 albums\, and is a  versatile artist\, writing and playing in trios\, small groups\, his own Latin Band\, big bands\, composing classical\, pop\, jazz music\, choral music\, and playing and conducting chamber and orchestral music\, and for wind ensemble.  Bill has worked with Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Woody Shaw\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Benny Golson\, James Moody\, The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, the Clayton Brothers\, Joe LaBarbera\, Holly Hofmann\, and Ray Brown.  Cunliffe wrote the score for Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s film “On The Shoulders Of Giants”\, a homage to the Harlem Rens\, a basketball team of the 1920’s and 30’s.  The movie received an NAACP Image Award for best documentary\, and Bill Cunliffe’s soundtrack was nominated for best album.  Cunliffe has authored 5 instructional books\, and two of them \, “Jazz Keyboard Toolbox”\, and “Jazz Inventions For Keyboard” have become standard reference works.  Bill has received 5 Grammy nominations\, is a two-time Emmy nominee.  In 2010 Bill received the Best Composer/Arranger Award from The L.A. Jazz Society\, and in the same year was named a Distinguished Faculty Member of the College of Arts at Cal State Fullerton\, where he is a Jazz Studies Professor. Cunliffe also teaches at Skidmore Jazz Institute\, and Vail Jazz Workshop.  Bill studied with pianist Mary Lou Williams at Duke University\, and received his Masters degree from Eastman School of Music.  In 1989 Cunliffe won the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition.  Bill grew up liking the music of the Fifth Dimension\, Burt Bacharach\, and Herb Alpert.  He was most influenced by Oscar Peterson to play jazz music. \n    Bassist Dave Stone has played with dozens of well known jazz artists\, pop and jazz vocalists\, big bands\, and on over 250 recordings. Dave has played studios\, clubs\, festivals\, Broadway shows\, Disneyland\, on film and t.v. soundtracks\, and is a busy and active free lance player. \n     Drummer Dave Tull is a gifted jazz singer\, song writer\, and teacher who is known for his humorous songs.  Dave has recorded 2 CDs as a leader and is active on the local jazz scene\, at jazz festivals\, and jazz series.  Tull has toured with Barbara Streisand\, Chuck Mangione\, Maynard Ferguson\, and played with Micheal Buble\, Seth McFarlane\, Ron Jones\, Cheryl Bentyne\, Jack Sheldon\, Richie Cole\, and as a busy sideman with small and big jazz bands.

Wilder wrote the definitive book book\, “American Popular Song” :  The Great Innovators\, 1900 – 1950.  In his life Wilder wrote 12 operas\, 4 musicals\, 23 pieces of chamber music\, including for solo instruments\, and 19 albums to date have been recorded by various musicians of his compositional works. Talented arranger Mark Masters has assembled 8 exceptional musicians to creatively perform the music Alec Wilder\, a 20th century music stand out. To his credit\, Masters pays a tribute to Wilder who was a big contributor to modern day music with his own personalized style of contemporary arrangements. To date\, Mark Masters has 15 recordings as a leader. \n    Trumpeter Bob Summers’ excellent playing has been heard in the best big bands\, both live and recorded in Southern California. He plays emotional and understated solos. Summers has played on over 200 recordings in over a 5 decade career. Woodwind specialist and vocalist Don Shelton has played with many jazz and pop artists that include Les Hooper\, Bob Florence\, The Hi-Los\, Johnny Mann\, The L.A. Jazz Orchestra\, The Singers Unlimited\, Tom Talbert\, Clare Fischer\, Frank Sinatra\, Judy Garland\, Rosemary Clooney\, Herb Jefferies\, Marty Patch\, Oscar Peterson\, and many others.  Shelton has performed on nearly 200 recordings in his career. \nSaxophonist Jerry Pinter has played on over 60 recordings\, which includes being a member of The Woody Herman Band.  A graduate of North Texas State University\, Pinter has played in dozens of jazz bands and is a jazz educator at Saddleback College and Cal State University\, San Marcos. \nTrombonist Dave Woodley has performed on nearly 30 recordings and is active in several Jazz Orchestras. \nBaritone Saxophonist Gary Smulyan from New York has performed and recorded with The Woody Herman Band\, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra\, The Mel Lewis Big Band\, The Dave Holland Big Band\, Dizzy Gillespie’s All – Star Big Band\, Carla Bley’s Band\,The Mingus Big Band\, The Smithsonian Jazz Mastersworks Orchestra\, and many others. Smulyan has 15 recordings as a leader and credits baritone saxman  Pepper Adams as his biggest influence. Smulyan is the Artistic Director of The Berkshire Hills Music Academy.  Smulyan has been voted the best Baritone Saxophonist numerous times by Downbeat\, Jazz It\, and Jazz Times Annual Readers and Critics Polls. Smulyan has played with many jazz greats and with 20 different big bands.   \nPianist Ed Czach is a longtime member of Luther Hughes’ Cannonball – Coltrane Project\, and plays in The Dave Slonaker Big Band. A wonderful accompanist and all around great player\, Czach has performed on 16 recordings. \nBassist Putter Smith is a teacher\, author and actor who has performed and recorded with dozens of jazz greats.  A great session player with many jazz and pop musicians\, Smith has taught at The Musicians Institute and The California Institute of The Arts\, and has been performing since the 1960’s.  A great improviser\, Smith has played with Thelonious Monk\, Duke Ellington\, Gerry Mulligan\, Alan Broadbent\, Pete Christlieb\, and many others.  Smith has 6 recordings as a leader/co – leader\, and has acted in 3 films\, which includes James Bond’s “Diamonds Are Forever”.   \nDrummer Kendall Kay is a graduate of North Texas State University and has played with dozens of jazz artists in Southern California for over the last 30 years. Kay has been with vocalist Jack Jones and his group for several years and has performed on over 100 recordings.

DESCRIPTION:Eric Reed – piano\nChris Lewis – saxophone\nMike Gurrola – bass\nAnthony Fung – drums \nPianist Eric Reed is a composer\, producer\, educator who has performed with many jazz giants that include Benny Carter\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Buster Williams\, and Wynton Marsalis.  Eric has played on 35 jazz recordings\, 27 as a leader\, and 4 dedicated to the music of Thelonious Monk. Reed’s earliest days were listening and playing music in church.  His first introduction to jazz was listening to the music of Horace Silver\, Art Blakey\, and Dave Brubeck.  Eric received guidance from saxophonist\, educator\, and arranger Harold Battiste\, Jr.\, and in his early career worked with Teddy Edwards\, Buddy Collette\, Gerald Wilson\, The Clayton Brothers\, Clora Bryant\, Clark Terry\, Dianne Reeves\, Elvin Jones\, Ron Carter\, Christian McBride\, Robert Stewart. Irvin Mayfield\, Cassandra Wilson and as a curator and producer for artists in a series called the Jazz Composers Portraits for the Manhattan’s Miller Theater.  Reed has directed vocalists Paula West and Mary Stallings\, and taught at the Julliard School\, The New School\, and The Manhattan School of Music.  Eric directed the musical “Crowns”\, played with The L. A. Gospel Messengers\,  and served as church minister of music. Reed continues to help young musicians manifest their innermost self through music. Reed composed and scored the music for the comedy film\, ‘Life”\, Featuring Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. \nSaxophonist Chris Lewis is a student in the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Program at the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA. Chris has studied with Dick Oatts\, Terrell Stafford\, Tim Warfield\, and Ben Schachter and graduated from Temple University where he has recorded with the school’s jazz ensemble and studio orchestra.  Lewis has performed at world jazz festivals\, and performed and recorded with Eric Reed\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, Rodney Green\, Jeremy Pelt and others. \nBassist Mike Gurrola\, influenced by Ray Brown\, was mentored by bassist John Clayton.  Mike has played with Eric Reed\, Jeff Hamilton\, Benny Green\, Ralph Moore\, Willie Jones 111\, and Roy McCurdy.  Gurrola plays with maturity\, musicianship and experience beyond his years.  Mike’s bass knowledge brings strength and humility in his playing\, and he swings with a groove and wealth of creative ideas.  Gurrola has appeared on 5 recordings\, and played with many jazz greats. \nDrummer Anthony Fung is a composer\, producer\, and bandleader\, and graduate of The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.  Anthony has performed with Herbie Hancock\, Wayne Shorter\, Chris Potter\, Billy Childs\, and others.  Fung also graduated from The Berklee School under the tutelage of pianist Danilo Perez. \nAnthony has performed at world jazz festivals with numerous jazz musicians\, co-leads the band “JabFung”\, tours with the David Binney Quartet\, and recorded 2 CD’s as a leader

SUMMARY:The Jon Mayer Quartet with Ralph Moore
DESCRIPTION:Pianist Jon Mayer was influenced by Charlie Parker and recorded with legendary saxophonists Jackie McLean\, and John Coltrane in the late 50’s. Jon is a hard – bop and lyrical player\, composer\, and educator. Mayer has 11 recordings as a leader\, and has toured or recorded with jazz and pop vocalists\, instrumentalists\, and jazz big bands. Jon cites pianists Bud Powell\, Bill Evans\, Red Garland\, Wynton Kelly\, Carl Perkins\, and Horace Silver as influences. \nSaxophonist Ralph Moore attended Berklee School of Music and was a member of The Tonight Show Band for 15 years. Ralph has performed on 14 recordings\, and 6 as a leader. Moore has played with Horace Silver\, Roy Haynes\, The Mingus Dynasty\, Freddie Hubbard\, Ray Brown\, Roy Hargrove\, J.J. Johnson\, \nBobby Hutcherson\, Oscar Peterson\, Kenny Barron\, Cedar Walton\, Brian Lynch\, and Bill Mays. \nDrummer Roy McCurdy attended Eastman School of Music.  In the early to mid 60’s\, Roy performed or recorded with The Mangione Brothers\, Sonny Rollins\, and The Art Farmer – Benny Golson Jazztet.  For 10 years\, McCurdy performed with The Cannonball Adderley Quintet\, making 18 recordings\, and 7 more with Brother Nat Adderley.  In total\, Roy has performed on 40 recordings.  A hard – bop player\, McCurdy has played with great vocalists and musicians\, and credits as influences Louie Bellson\, Shelly Manne\, Sam Woodyard\, Buddy Rich\, \nPapa Jo Jones\, Philly Jo Jones\, Duke Ellington\, Jimmy Lunceford\, and Lionel Hampton.  Roy currently teaches at The USC Thornton School of Music. \nBassist Will Lyle attended The Berklee School of Music and is an outstanding arranger\, teacher\, and performer.

Don is also a talented vocalist who was a member of The Hi-Los\, and The Singers Unlimited\, two very popular vocal groups. Shelton has appeared on over 200 recordings spanning 7 decades with several of the great big bands since the 1960’s to many present day contemporary musical artists. \nTrombonist Les Benedict has played with many jazz\, pop\, and rock greats\, and is extremely versatile\, playing in many different styles. Les is an active clinician and instructor\, having taught at the Idyllwild Arts\, College of the Canyons\, UClA\, and USC Pianist Jeff Colella is an accompanist\, recording artist\, arranger\, clinician\, and music teacher. \nJeff was Lou Rawls pianist and conductor for 16 years\, and musical director for vocalist Jack Jones. \nColella has worked with dozens of world class musicians\, and is on the staff of The College Of Contemporary Music in L. A. \nBassist Putter Smith is an educator\, composer\, and skilled musician who has performed and recorded with 100’s of world class musicians for over 5 decades.  He is grateful for choosing a life of music\, that he says\, is not easy\, but it is so cool. \nGuitarist Doug McDonald has performed on a dozen of his own recordings and plays in a swinging\, relaxed style that is a reminder of post – bop guitarists Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd. \nDrummer Kendall Kay\, a graduate of North Texas State\, has performed and recorded with numerous world class musicians over the last 30 years. \nThe 6 members of The American Jazz Institute All – Stars

SUMMARY:Charlie Shoemake Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Shoemake is a master vibist\, and teacher of jazz improvisation. Clarinet and big band great Artie Shaw says\, “In jazz\, there have been only a few great players on the vibraphone. One of them is Charlie Shoemake.” Jazz writer Leonard Feather on Charlie Shoemake\, “Arguably the most successful teacher of jazz improvisation in Southern California history\, Shoemake is also a highly charged mallet man capable of blistering solos off the metronome markings.” Charlie Shoemake began his piano studies at the age of 6\, and was excellent at both music and sports through his school years. Charlie was an all-city baseball player and scouted by the Saint Louis Cardinals. Charlie attended Southern Methodist University\, and majored in piano and played baseball\, but by 1956 decided to pursue music moving from Texas to LA and embarked on a career in jazz music. Through the late 1950’s Charlie studied and practiced to master the music concepts of jazz greats like Charlie Parker\, Bud Powell\, and other greats like Fats Navarro\, Kenny Dorham\, Clifford Brown\, Sonny Rollins\, Hank Mobley\, Sonny Stitt\, Phil Woods\, Hank Jones\, Tommy Flanagan\, and Sonny Clark. Charlie studied harmony with pianist Jimmy Rowles\, and through the 1960’s accompanied singers and performed on recorded commercials. It was in 1959 Charlie married his wife Sandi and together they did studio work\, TV\, and commercial work. In the early 60’s Charlie got inspiration and support from Victor Feldman\, and worked for composers Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin. In 1966 Charlie was invited to play with the George Shearing Quintet while listening to the group at Shelley’s Manne Hole. For the next 7 years Charlie would play in Shearing’s Quintet with other notable jazz artists like Joe Pass\, Pat Martino\, Ron Anthony\, Andy Simpkins\, Harvey Mason\, Stix Hooper\, and Vernel Fournier. After this Charlie opened a jazz improvisation school in LA\, and with his wife Sandi raised his son. Till 1990 Charlie taught over 1500 jazz players and is credited for helping the success of many jazz musicians careers like Ted Nash\, Tim Armacost\, Andy Martin\, Kye Palmer\, Cecilia Coleman\, Keith Sanders\, Dave Koz\, and Richard Elliott. Moving to Cambria California the Shoemake’s performed 500 concerts over the next 20 years at the Hamlet Restaurant through 2012. The Shoemake’s have continued to actively perform in the Cambria area\, and in 2012 Charlie established a jazz school called Central Coast Jazz Institute\, a 501C3 non-profit organization. As the schools director Charlie right away had four of his students named The Best Community Jazz Combo in the U.S. by Downbeat Magazine. Charlie states\, “As for my playing career I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunities to play with so many of America’s greatest jazz musicians\, and as for my teaching years the continuing achievements of so many of my former students has been extremely meaningful.” \nVocalist Sandi Shoemake is a beautiful phraser\, and sings with a pristine\, controlled\, warm\, pure\, and imaginative style. Sandi’s early career was singing with school choirs\, her fathers’ dance bands\, and at LA City College with Bob Florence\, Jim Hall\, Gary Peacock\, and Lanny Morgan. Sandi joined the Si Zentner Orchestra where they became well-known performing at the Hollywood Palladium. Sandi sang in nightclubs with Charlie\, and did studio work for NBC from 1965-1971\, and also appeared on many CBS and ABC TV shows that included Andy Williams\, Jerry Lewis\, Red Skelton\, the Lennon Sisters and Jimmy Durante\, Bing Crosby\, Doris Day\, Dean Martin\, and Nelson Riddle. Sandi’s singing influences include Connie Boswell\, Helen Forrest\, Doris Day\, Sarah Vaughn\, Jackie Cain\, Frank Sinatra\, Dick Haymes\, David Allyn\, and Billie Eckstine. The Shoemake’s have recorded 19 albums\, and Charlie performed on Clint Eastwood’s film “Bird”. \nThe LA Times says\, “Joe Bagg is a masterful organist”\, and “A highly refined player with a light touch\, who listens”\, by Downbeat Magazine. Joe studied with pianist Kenny Barron and received his Masters’ Degree at Rutgers University. Joe has worked as a Russian Linguist in the army in Germany\, and has been a fixture on the LA jazz scene for over the last 20 years. Joe has received numerous recognitions by Downbeat’s critics and readers’ polls\, and performed on Clint Eastwood’s movies “J. Edgar”\, and “Jersey Boys”. Joe has worked as a sideman for dozens of prominent jazz artists\, has taught at colleges and universities\, and currently teaches at the Musicians Institute. Joe is an in-demand performer and studio recording artist\, and has performed on over 40 CD recordings. \nGuitarist and educator Frank Potenza is a protégé of the great Joe Pass\, and has recorded 9 solo albums\, one being a tribute album “For Joe”. Frank has toured with the Gene Harris Quartet for 5 years\, and has performed with many jazz artists\, performed solo concerts\, and leads his own groups. Frank is a professor and chair of the guitar program at USC’s Thornton School of Music. Frank received his Bachelors’ Degree from Berklee College of Music\, and a Masters’ Degree from Cal State Los Angeles. Frank has produced 3 jazz guitar instructional videos\, was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame\, and produced a Jazzumentary honoring Joe Pass entitled “A Not So Average Joe”. \nLuther Hughes is a bassist\, band leader\, composer\, educator\, record producer\, and music publisher of Primrose Lane Music. Luther trained at the University of Cincinnati’s Conservatory of Music\, and received a Bachelors’ Degree at Cal State Long Beach. Luther leads three distinct jazz groups\, the Cannonball-Coltrane Project\, Luther Hughes and Friends Remembering the Nat King Cole Trio\, and H.E.R.K. (Hughes\, Eschete\, Ranier\, Kreibich). Luther has taught at several colleges and universities\, played with over 100 top jazz artists\, has performed musical theatre on stage\, played on film and TV scores\, and has played on nearly 100 CD recordings. Luther has played with a dozen top jazz big bands\, performed with pop\, rock\, and country artists\, and has appeared at over a dozen jazz festivals. Luther has also broadcasted jazz on 88.1 FM at Cal State Long Beach. \nDrummer Paul Kreibich began the drums at the age of 9\, and began working five nights a week on Balboa Island while attending high school. Paul studied at the Berklee College of Music\, and Orange Coast College with percussion teacher Forest Clark. Paul joined the Vince Wallace Quintet\, worked for the Continental Circus\, toured with Carmen McRae\, studied with Fred Gruber at LA City College\, and has played in Japan\, at Carnegie Hall\, and toured with the Ray Charles Band. Paul has been a first call drummer\, and played on over 60 CD recordings. Paul toured with the Gene Harris Quartet\, has two CD recordings as a leader\, and has taught at Cal State Fullerton\, USC\, and Valley College. Paul plays the drums with crisp rhythm\, well executed licks\, and compliments other musicians by filling the holes with his loose and groovy feel. Paul always plays with sensitivity\, and a sympathetic feeling that is supportive\, amiable\, and personable.

SUMMARY:Holly Hofmann Mike Wofford Bruce Forman Trio
DESCRIPTION:Holly Hofmann began playing flute at the age of 5. She studied and performed with classical ensembles\, and became one of the most authoritative and swinging flutist in jazz. Holly has established the flute as a front line instrument playing blusey\, be-bop based improvisations with technical prowess. She completed her studies at the Interlochen Arts Academy\, and studied with the Cleveland Orchestra’s principle flutist Maurice Sharp. Holly earned degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music\, and the University of Northern Colorado. Holly became a resident of San Diego\, and became a jazz host booking artists four nights a week on a national jazz program at Horton Grand Hotel in San Diego. During a seven year period Holly presented top jazz artists such as Diana Krall\, Cassandra Wilson\, Tommy Flanagan\, Cedar Walton\, and Joe Henderson. Holly performed with jazz greats Ray Brown\, Frank Wess\, Cedar Walton\, and Kenny Barron. She recorded her first CD with Mike Wofford\, Bob Magnuson\, and Sherman Ferguson named “Take Note”. In the mid 90’s Holly recorded with Bill Cunliffe\, and played at Birdland\, and the Village Vanguard touring with Ray Brown. Holly married Mike Wofford in 2000 and toured with Ray Brown\, Victor Lewis\, Peter Washington\, and Ben Riley. Holly toured with an all-star sextet called “Flutology” with Frank Wess and Aly Ryerson performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Holly has recorded “Turn Signal” with Mike Wofford and Terrel Stafford\, and recorded the alto flute project named “Lowlife” with Mike Wofford\, John Clayton\, Jeff Hamilton\, and Anthony Wilson. Holly performs with perfect accuracy and in the moment fluidity. Holly is a producer of jazz concerts\, clinics\, jazz parties\, festivals\, and various jazz series. Holly teaches master classes at schools and universities and is a board member of the Keynote Jazz Foundation which provides concerts and clinics in middle schools and high schools. Holly has 12 recordings as a leader\, and is one of the premier jazz flutists. Alto sax great Phil Woods said\, “Along with Hubert Laws\, Holly is frankly the best jazz flute player today”. She has become the standard by which jazz flute is judged. \nMike Wofford is an artful jazz pianist who is rewarding for those who listen to him. Mike began playing at the age of 7 and learned harmonic creativity from his teacher Bill Franks\, who was an admirer of Teddy Wilson. Mike was self-taught\, and influenced by Art Tatum\, Thelonious Monk\, and Horace Silver. Mike began his professional career in 1961 with Slim Gallard\, then joined Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All-Stars. In 1962 Mike joined Shorty Rogers and his Giants\, and recorded on Mel Torme’s album “Comin Home Baby”. Mike was active in the LA jazz club scene and accompanied vocalist June Christy in 1963\, recording with Gary Burton and Larry Bunker. Mike’s first trio album “Strawberry Wine” was recorded in 1964 and then Mike joined Shelly Manne’s quintet performing at the Manne Hole in Hollywood till Shelly Manne’s passing in 1984. Mike has toured Europe\, Brazil\, and Japan\, and is an in-demand freelance studio pianist for TV\, and film scoring. Mike has recorded with dozens of pop\, folk\, R&B\, and jazz artists. Mike twice toured as Sarah Vaughn’s conductor and pianist\, and as well for Ella Fitzgerald for 5 years. Mike has worked and recorded with numerous top jazz artists\, and with his own trio and quartet. Mike also works as a duo with his wife Holly and in quartet\, and string orchestra settings. Mike and Holly are currently Capri recording artists. Mike received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 22nd Annual San Diego Music Awards in 2012. Mike has fourteen albums as a leader\, and recorded on over 30 albums in total. \nBruce Forman started on the piano and switched to guitar at the age of 13 where he worked with musicians like Eddie Duran\, Vince Lateano\, Eddie Marshall\, George Cables\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Woody Shaw\, and toured with Richie Cole. Bruce has recorded 19 CDs as a leader\, and played as a sideman on countless recordings that include Ray Brown\, Bobby Hutcherson\, and Roger Kellaway. Bruce has performed on three of Clint Eastwood’s distinguished films that includes “Million Dollar Baby”\, “Flags of our Fathers”\, and “Here After”. Bruce is a producer\, arranger\, acclaimed educator\, and an in resident teacher at the USC Studio/Jazz Department. Bruce’s music is immersed in American culture and influenced by its traditions. Bruce plays be-bop and western swing\, and is constantly expanding the paradigm of what creative music is all about. Bruce’s music reflects his Texas origins\, his career in San Francisco and New York\, and years on the road that contributes to his unique and highly personal vision he demonstrates today. Bruce has appeared at over 20 Monterey Jazz Festival performances\, and has made several recordings on his own record label. Guitarist Barney Kessel says\, “Bruce Forman is one of the great lights of our age”.

DESCRIPTION:World-class trombonist and educator Andy Martin comes from a musical family. His career began in his teens and Andy has developed a wonderful technique and virtuosity. He was quick to appear on the LA music scene\, and has taught countless young musicians. Andy has appeared as a guest artist and clinician at many colleges and universities. He is an adjunct instructor in jazz studies at the USC Thornton’s School of Music. Andy has been a leader/co-leader on 12 albums\, has been a sideman on over 300 albums\, and is the paramount trombonist in LA. Andy has collaborated with Carl Fontana\, Pete Christlieb\, Bobby Shew\, Eric Marienthal\, Stanley Turrentine\, Horace Silver\, big band leader Vic Martin\, and has played lead trombone and been the featured soloist on virtually every big band in LA. Andy is the lead trombonist and featured soloist with Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band\, played 15 years with Bill Holman’s Big Band\, and has played in the big bands of Tom Kubis\, Jack Sheldon\, Louie Bellson\, Quincy Jones\, Matt Cattingub\, Bob Curnow\, Patrick Williams\, and Sammy Nestico. Andy is a prominent musician on numerous commercial recordings\, TV shows\, motion picture soundtracks\, and live theatre. Andy has worked with the Pussycat Dolls\, Coldplay\, and Michael Buble. Andy has performed on the major award shows that include the Grammy’s\, Emmy’s\, Acadamy’s\, Golden Globes\, and the Screen Actors Guild. Andy has performed on Dancing with the Stars\, American Idol\, TV’s Family Guy\, American Dad\, and King of the Hill. In total Andy has appeared on over 150 major films. \nTrombonist\, composer\, arranger\, and clinician Francisco Torres has played in many genres of music including jazz\, classical\, Latin\, funk\, reggae\, ska\, and studio work. Francisco has been a part of 3 Grammy Award winning records\, 5 Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations\, for Best Latin Jazz Album\, and is the musical director for the Grammy Award winning Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band. Francisco has recorded with over 50 different artists\, and performed on TV shows\, movie soundtracks\, and numerous award shows. Francisco has played with the big bands of Bill Holman\, Bob Mintzer\, Sammy Nestico\, Bill Cunliffe\, Budman/Levy\, Emil Richards\, Frank Capp\, Gerald Wilson\, Gregg Field\, and Tom Kubis. Francisco’s influences include Carl Fontana\, Frank Rosolino\, Andy Martin\, Hal Crook\, Barry Rogers\, Generoso Jimenez\, and Leopoldo Pineda. Francisco is an in-demand arranger\, clinician\, guest artist\, and was named the director of the SCSBOA High School All-Star Jazz Band. Francisco has been commissioned to arrange and compose for high schools and universities\, and created and conceived Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars with Jose Rizo\, assembling some of the best Latin Jazz musicians in LA. \nDrummer Jimmy Branly grew up in Cuba\, and studied at the Conservatory of Music in Havana’s Adolpho Guzman\, and the ENA (National School of Arts). Jimmy started playing at the age of 15 with the Cuarto Espacio Band\, with the Afro Acuba Band\, with singer Natalie Cole\, with the Cuban-Salsa-Timba Band which included Issac Delgado and NGLA Banda. Jimmy toured with pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba\, and twenty years ago moved to LA where he has performed with over 50 different music artists. Jimmy recorded one album with Abe Laborial\, and Otmaro Ruiz. He performed a Latin music presentation for President Obama at the White House 5 years ago. Jimmy currently is working on sound and video projects. \nClassically and street trained percussionist Joey De Leon has played bongos\, timbalero\, and drums with Poncho Sanchez’s Latin Jazz Band. Joey has a degree from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. Joey comes from a legacy of well-known musicians in the Latin music genre. His father was a founding member of New York City Salsa\, Bobby Rodriguez y Compania\, and his uncle was an all-around percussionist. Joey is a member of the Grammy Award winning Arturo Sandoval LA All-Star Band\, and West Coast Sextet. Joey is a member of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band\, and plays with numerous top LA session musicians\, showing his wide array of diverse percussion talents. \nPianist\, arranger\, and composer Max Haymer began classical music at the age of 7\, and jazz at the age of 14. He has studied with pianist Tamir Hendelman\, Kei Akagi\, Darek Oles\, Bobby Rodriguez\, Sherman Ferguson\, and musical theatre with Dr. Gary Busby. Max received his degree and Magna Cum Laude at UC Irvine. Max has won second place at the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition\, and the Great American Jazz Piano Competition in Florida. Max was a finalist in the Horace Silver Piano Competition\, and the UWF Phillips Jazz Piano Competition. Max received New Rising Star Recognition by the Orange County Performing Arts Center. For the last dozen years Max has played and recorded with numerous jazz artists in both LA and New York jazz clubs. Max was selected as the musical director for the Music Theatre of Connecticut\, and was a score coordinator for the documentary CubAmerican under composer Carlos Alvarez. Max has toured with trumpeter Arturo Sandoval at prestigious jazz festivals\, and concert halls. Max has recorded one CD entitled “Pickpocket Witness”. \nBassist Ahmet Sazin is an outstanding player in the Southern California area rounding out the group.

DESCRIPTION:Composer\, arranger\, Grammy Award winning\, and Academy Award nominated pianist Roger Kellaway graduated from the New England Conservatory. Roger made his first recording in 1963\, and is known for writing and playing the closing theme “Remembering You” for the TV sitcom “All in the Family”\, and “Archie Bunkers Place” from 1971-1983. In 1970 Roger formed the acclaimed Cello Quartet\, described as crossover\, chamber jazz\, and the beginning of New Age music. The groups theme “Come to the Meadow” was used as the theme for NPR’s “Selected Shorts”. Kellaway has recorded more than 250 albums\, and has worked with everyone from Ellington to Elvis\, Bobby Darin to Joni Mitchell\, Dizzy Gillespie to Henry Mancini\, Carmen McRae to Barbra Streisand\, and Quincy Jones to Yo-Yo Ma. Roger is a major pianist and composer of protean abilities in the fields of jazz\, classical\, and pop music\, also scoring for films and television. Roger has been a sideman to artists that include Clark Terry\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Zoot Sims\, Al Cohn\, Ben Webster\, Gerry Mulligan\, Eddie Daniels\, and numerous others. Kellaway has one musical foot on tradition\, and the other foot tapping and leaning into the future. Roger was influenced by pianists George Shearing\, Billy Taylor\, and Horace Silver. He has been associated with Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughn\, and has recorded musical tributes to Oscar Peterson\, Bobby Darin\, Duke Ellington\, and a clarinet tribute to Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman with Eddie Daniels. Since the 1960’s Roger has been commissioned for the New York City Ballet\, writing orchestral pieces for the LA Philharmonic\, the National Symphony\, the New American Orchestra\, the New York Philharmonic\, Chamber Works for Carnegie Hall performances\, and was musical director for Stephane Grapelli’s 80th birthday tribute with Yo-Yo Ma. In 2008 Kellaway was the band leader and pianist for the “Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl” concerts by Van Morrison\, celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the 1968 acclaimed album. Roger received an Oscar nomination for Best Adaptation Score for the film “A Star is Born” in 1976\, and received a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for Eddie Daniels album “Memos From Paradise” in 1988. Guitarist Robben Ford credits Roger Kellaway and Tom Scott as major influences while playing with Joni Mitchell. Kellaway was featured on Ilya Serov’s original rendition of Django Reinhart’s “Swing 42” in 2017. Kellaway recorded “Anything Goes” produced by Ettore Stratta in Paris\, and was musical director for the tribute to Oscar Peterson at Carnegie Hall. Roger began studying piano at the age of 7\, and by the age of 12 was listening to both jazz and classical music equally. Roger studied college level music theory at Newton High School (ranked #3 in the U.S.) and performed the works of Mozart\, Beethoven\, and Bach on double bass and percussion in the school orchestra. At the New England Conservatory Roger studied piano\, double bass\, and composition. Two years later he went on the road playing bass. In 1960 Kellaway freelanced on piano in New York City\, and played record dates\, and in jazz clubs with such singers as Lena Horne. Kellaway’s favorite artists at that time were Sonny Rollins\, Wes Montgomery\, Oliver Nelson\, Ben Webster\, Clark Terry\, and Bob Brookmeyer. In the mid-60’s Roger moved to LA\, doing studio work\, and playing on and writing film scores. He became musical director for Bobby Darin\, and arranged and conducted his album of songs from the film “Dr. Dolittle”. Roger worked on Carmen McRae’s album “I am Music”\, writing for her “I Have the Feeling I Have Been Here Before”\, with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. Roger has performed numerous times on Takao Ishizuka’s “100 Gold Finger Concerts” with pianists Hank Jones\, Kenny Barron\, Tommy Flannigan\, and John Lewis. Kellaway composed the music for London’s West End Production of “Lenny” starring Eddie Izzard\, wrote\, arranged\, and performed with the WDR Big Band on a two hour show celebrating composer Kurt Weills’ 100th birthday\, featuring Caterina Valente. Roger was musical director for the film “Beyond the Sea” and was the conductor and pianist for its 13 city tour. Kellaway conducted Sir Paul McCartney’s world premiere of “Nova” in Buenos Aries with the Youth Orchestra of the America’s\, and toured with Tony Bennett as his musical director. Roger received the Prix Du Jazz Classique (the French “Grammy”) for his CD “Heroes” (dedicated to Oscar Peterson).

DESCRIPTION:Drummer and composer Joe Labarbera was a member of Bill Evans last trio. He was mentored by musicians John Laporta\, Charlie Mariano\, Herb Pomeroy\, and Alan Dawson. Joe is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston\, and is part of a musical family\, his brother Pat is a saxophonist and brother John is a Big Band arranger and composer. Joe started out with the Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd and has played with Chuck Mangione\, Joe Farrell\, Jim Hall\, Phil Woods\, Art Farmer\, Gary Burton\, Art Pepper\, John Scofield\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Toots Thielmans\, Tony Bennett\, Bill Mays\, Eddie Daniels\, Randy Brecker\, and many others. Joe’s mature style of drumming is traditional\, innovative\, and avant-garde\, and has the ability to splice the different styles together. Joe teaches at Cal Arts\, the Bud Shank Jazz Workshop\, and has been a guest performer and lecturer at various colleges. Joe has served on the National Endowment for the Arts Council in Washington D.C.. In 1999 Joe started an independent record label with Tom Warrington\, Larry Koonse\, and Clay Jenkins to record creative music that is close to his heart. The Jazz Compass label has put out 28 recordings to date. \nBill Cunliffe is an accomplished composer\, arranger\, and pianist who has been nominated or won several top music awards. Bill received the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement of Oscar Peterson’s “West Side Story” medley. Bill has 20 recordings as a leader\, has played and recorded with dozens of great jazz artists\, and has been named a modern jazz mainstream pianist by the New York Times. Bill is an inventive\, melodic\, and soulful musician who has authored several books on jazz\, and currently teaches at Cal State Fullerton. Bill has composed or performed Brazilian\, Latin\, Trio Jazz\, in orchestras\, big bands\, chamber music\, and choirs. His fellow school faculty members call him charming\, witty\, warm\, and humble. \nTrumpeter Clay Jenkins is a graduate of North Texas State. He has worked with the big bands of Stan Kenton\, Harry James\, Buddy Rich\, and Count Basie. Clay received his Masters’ from USC\, and has taught at the Foundation for the Junior Blind\, USC\, Cal State Northridge\, Cal Institute of Arts\, was named the Chairman of the Music Theory Department at the Colburn School of Performing Arts\, has taught at summer jazz camps\, and is an associate professor of jazz trumpet at Eastman School in Rochester\, New York. Clay has recorded with the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra\, has co-led with the Kim Richmond Jazz Ensemble\, and recorded with dozens of jazz artists. \nSaxophonist Rob Lockart did his schooling at Eastman College in New York\, and Banff School in Canada. Rob has worked with Woody Herman\, Doc Severinsen\, Kurt Elling\, Steve Houghton\, the Houston Symphony Orchestra\, and has worked on numerous TV and film projects. \nBassist Jonathan Richards is a composer and touring/studio musician who has worked in TV\, film\, and on viral videos. Jonathan has worked with numerous musical artists\, and is co-leader of the Wilberta Jazz and Alternative Ensemble. He is a graduate of USC Thornton School of Music\, and currently is working on his Masters’ at Cal Arts.
