SUMMARY:The Banda Brothers Latin Jazz Sextet
DESCRIPTION:The group includes Ramon Banda on drums\, Tony Banda on bass\, Francisco Torres on trombone\, Javier Vergara on saxophone & flute\, Chris Barron on piano\, and Leo Corona on percussion. The Original Banda Brothers have played for 24 years as the anchors of Pancho Sanchez Grammy Award winning Latin Jazz Group. The Banda Brothers are also creators of a hand crafted Shekeres “beaded gourd” percussion instrument. This instrument is a favorite of world leading percussionists. The Banda Brothers were commissioned by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. to create Shekere for their new exhibit entitled “Latin Jazz; La Combinacion Perfecta”. This bilingual exhibition explores the history\, cultural content\, musicians\, places\, instruments\, and dance aesthetics behind the development of this musical genre. This exhibit will be shown in 15 cities over a four year tour across the U.S. and Caribbean. These unique Shekeres will be available for purchase soon. The Banda Brothers grew up in the city of Norwalk and began performing at the ages of 5 and 7 years old. They learned to play traditional Mexican songs in a lively west Texas style\, and learned to play American standards\, classic Cha Cha’s\, and R&B music. The Banda Brothers have played with Pancho Sanchez for over 34 years\, and have played with many jazz and Latin greats that include Tito Puente\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Cal Tjader\, Freddie Hubbard\, Carmen McRae\, Mongo Santamaria\, Celia Cruz\, Chick Corea\, Willie Bobo\, and dozens of others. Their influences range from Rahsaan Roland Kirk to Hank Williams. The Banda Brothers merge Afro-Latin music with American jazz bringing insight and imagination to jazz and Latin originals and classics. \nTrombonist Francisco Torres has been the director of Grammy Award winning Pancho Sanchez Latin Jazz Group\, and been part of Grammy Award winning Claire Fischer Big Band\, and Grammy Award winning Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Francisco has produced several Pancho Sanchez recordings that have received 5 Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations for Best Latin Jazz Recording. Francisco has played on over 35 recordings with over 50 different groups. He has played on 5 film soundtracks\, and over a dozen TV and Award Shows. Francisco has played with 10 of LA’s best big bands\, and is an in demand clinician and guest artist. He is the director of S.C.S.B.O.A. All-Star High School Jazz Band. Francisco has arranged\, composed\, and been commissioned to write for several high school and university jazz big bands. Francisco helped Jose Rizo create and conceive Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars\, which is a collection of LA’s best Latin Jazz musicians. \nWoodwind specialist Javier Vergara\, and native of Mexico City doubles on saxophone and flute on a wide range of tunes. He has been a main stay with the Banda Brothers for over 20 years. His sound and energy is a bright spot for this group. \nKeyboardist Chris Barron is a composer\, arranger\, and educator who has played with the Banda Brothers for over 25 years. Chris doubles on acoustic piano and synthesizer\, and is heavily involved in music education in the LA area. Chris has created a music curriculum for youth K through 5th grades\, and teaches woodwind\, and horn sections at the LA College of Music. Chris is director of the Integrated Music Academy creating musicians one group at a time by Music Language Immersion. He is also music director of the Mariners Church. Chris has composed music for a PBS special\, and applies his multi-talented skills in nearly every aspect of music. Chris has worked with Michael McDonald\, Leon Ware\, Jimmy Haslip of the Yellow Jackets\, Chuck Negron\, Celia Cruz\, Jose Rizo’s Latin Jazz All-Stars\, and Pancho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band. Chris has also worked on several different film and TV projects. \nPercussionist Leo Corona plays a wide variety of styles that include Latin\, funk\, Brazilian\, Ballero\, Danzon\, and Caribbean music. Leo has worked regularly with the Irving Flores Latin Band\, and Daniel Lopez Infanzon Band. Leo is active in the San Diego Latin and jazz music scene.

SUMMARY:Christian Jacob Trio
DESCRIPTION:The trio includes Christian Jacob on piano\, Trey Henry on bass\, and Ray Brinker on drums. Pianist Christian Jacob\, a native of France\, is a co-leader\, arranger\, and pianist with the Tierney Sutton Band. The band has recorded 8 CD’s\, and Christian also performs as a solo artist\, leader\, arranger\, and conductor of big bands\, and symphonies around the world. He has even played for the King of Thailand. Christian began playing classical piano at the age of 4 influenced by composers Debussy and Ravel\, who had a universal harmonic influence on jazz. Around the age of 9 or 10 Christian discovered jazz\, and was particularly moved by the improvisational abilities of Oscar Peterson. Christian developed perfect pitch\, and learned what musical feel is through interpreting various musical pieces. Christian studied classical music\, and played jazz with different combos developing his own style. His first discovery on the piano was Dave Brubeck\, and later Oscar Peterson who played in a different dimension\, showing his classical techniques and personality. Christian realized Oscar played what he said and had fun doing it. Christian won first prize from the Paris Conservatory\, and taught at the French National Conservatory in Metz. Soon thereafter Christian went to America to study jazz at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. It was here where he learned the art of improvisation and developed his own personal style. Christian won the Oscar Peterson and Joe Zawinul Jazz Masters Awards\, The Great American Jazz Piano Competition\, and won Downbeat’s award for the Top Collegiate Jazz Soloist. He graduated from Berklee with Magna Cum Laude. He also taught at Berklee\, and worked with vibist Gary Burton. Next Christian toured with Maynard Ferguson’s Band for 8 months\, performing almost every day. It was exhausting\, educational\, inspirational\, and fun. It was his greatest learning experience. Maynard Ferguson presented Christian on Concord Records where he recorded 2 CD’s. Christian has performed and recorded with Phil Woods\, Airto\, Flora Purim\, Michael & Randy Brecker\, Miroslav Vitous\, Benny Golson\, Bill Holman\, Terje Gewelt\, Carl Saunders\, Franco Ambrosetti\, Tommy Smith\, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra\, and his own big band. Since the mid 90’s Christian has been a member of the Tierney Sutton Band with Trey Henry and Ray Brinker. They are a tight-knit group that play sophisticated\, refreshing arrangements with musical joy. The band has received 5 Grammy Nominations. Christian has also recorded with Swiss saxophonist Fritz Renold\, and was commissioned to lead two classical symphonies. He has also worked with the Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra\, and was director of the Lorraine Orchestra in Nancy\, Meurthe-et-Moselle\, composing their inaugural commission. Christian has made 3 trio recordings\, and is the musical director for Broadway legend and the musical theatre of Betty Buckley. Christian has appeared on over 60 recordings\, has made a solo piano recording\, and has toured Japan. Christian’s playing can be described as a post-bop modernist influenced by Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett. He plays crystalline melodies\, and expansive harmonies\, creating a dense\, polyrhythmic thicket overlaying two or more Latin grooves from which his music springs out and hurdles forward. Christian has impeccable taste and touch. \nBassist Trey Henry has performed with the LA Philharmonic\, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra\, the big bands of Bill Holman\, Bob Florence\, Gerald Wilson\, and has played on numerous TV soundtracks\, the Academy’s\, the Emmy’s\, “American Idol”\, “Dancing with the Stars”\, “Family Guy”\, “The Simpson’s”\, “King of the Hill”\, “American Dad”\, and “America’s Got Talent”. Trey has played with everyone from Henry Mancini to Johnny Cash\, from Linda Ronstadt to Quincy Jones\, from Ray Charles to Maynard Ferguson\, and from Natalie Cole to Michelle Legrand. Trey has played on over 200 CDs\, countless jingles\, and dozens of TV and motion picture soundtracks. Trey has worked with Flora Purim\, Airto Moreira\, Sammy Nestico\, Tom Scott\, Steve Allen\, and Lalo Schifrin. Trey has recorded 8 CDs with the Tierney Sutton Band\, receiving 5 Grammy Nominations. Trey is also part of the Christian Jacob Trio with Ray Brinker who all together work with Tierney Sutton. Trey has played with Stevie Wonder\, Willie Nelson\, Joe Williams\, James Taylor\, Aretha Franklin\, Diane Schuur\, Aaron Neville\, Dizzy Gillespie\, and Alan & Marilyn Bergman. Trey has worked on the film soundtracks “Rush Hour”\, “Thomas Crown Affair”\, “Lion King”\, “Far from Heaven”\, “Brother Bear”\, “Haunted Mission”\, “Nacho Libre”\, “Taladega Nights”\, “Burlesque”\, “Charlie St. Cloud”\, “Pursuit of Happiness”\, “Mr. Poppers Penguins”\, and “Jay Edgar”. \nDrummer Ray Brinker is a graduate of North Texas State University\, and was a member of the Grammy nominated “One o’clock Lab Band”. Ray has toured with Maynard Ferguson\, and played with over 30 different bands in his career. Ray is a founding member of the Tierney Sutton Band of which he has played in for 23 years\, and has been a co-arranger on the bands 10 CD recordings. The band has received a Grammy nomination for 5 years in a row for Best Jazz Vocal Recording. Ray also received a Grammy nomination as a co-arranger for Best Arrangement of a Vocalist Recording. Ray played on Ray Charles 8 time award winning “Genius Loves Company” recording\, and has played on the film soundtracks “The Ray Charles Story”\, “Shrek”\, “Chicken Run”\, “Dear God”\, “The Alamo”\, “Brother Bear”\, “Lilo and Stitch”\, “Pluto Nash”\, “Assault on Precinct 13”\, and countless TV shows including “America’s Got Talent”\, and “American Hustle”. Ray is a member of the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band. \nSaturday May 6th at 7:00pm the Christian Jacob Trio performs at Pete Carlson’s. SUMMARY:The Azar Lawrence Quintet
DESCRIPTION:The Quintet includes Azar Lawrence on saxophone\, Nolan Shaheed on trumpet\, Theo Saunders on piano\, Henry Franklin on bass\, and Marvin “Smitty” Smith on drums. Azar Lawrence began playing the drums\, violin\, piano\, and vocals at the age of 5. At the age of 11 he began playing the alto sax\, mentored by Mr. Shoemaker. He was also taught by his mother who was a classical pianist\, and when attending Dorsey High School was schooled by Herbert Baker. At the age of 17 he played with Clark Terry\, and Muddy Waters\, at the age of 19 he played with George Cables\, Candy Finch\, Larry Gales\, and Woody Shaw. From there he played with Ike and Tina Turner\, and at the age of 20\, joined Elvin Jones’ group. From there Azar replaced John Coltrane upon his death and played with the McCoy Tyner group for 5 years. Influenced by jazz man Horace Tapscott and Reggie Golson\, son of Benny Golson\, they together listened to the music of Coltrane\, Miles\, Monk\, and Shorter\, Azar also credits Sonny Rollins\, Arthur Blythe\, and Yusef Lateef as influences. Azar plays with great spirituality\, and has a distinctive sound that is full forced post be-bop. He plays with a deep virtuosity\, and expresses vivid ideas with a palpable texture in his sound. After working with McCoy Tyner Azar went on to play with Miles Davis\, Freddie Hubbard\, and Woody Shaw. Azar has played many styles of music including Afro/Cuban\, Avant Garde\, Latin\, modal\, modern creative\, and world fusion. Azar has worked with literally dozens of jazz greats\, and has also worked with Earth\, Wind\, & Fire\, Frank Zappa\, Busta Rhymes\, and with Marvin Gaye won a Grammy Award. Azar has made 10 CDs as a leader\, and has played on nearly 60 recordings in his career. Now in her 90’s Azar’s mother taught him “Music is your voice\, keep it pure and share your gift not for the fame or fortune\, but for the creator\, as it was given to you by him at no cost. If you should make a living from your gift then that’s just gravy.” Azar plays for mind\, body\, soul\, and the self. \nNolan Shaheed began playing the violin at age 12\, and soon after hearing Louis Armstrong made the switch to the trumpet. He enjoyed sports as much as music and became a track star in high school\, and would continue to excel as a world-class runner. In music Nolan was chosen to play on the All City High School and State Jazz Bands. Nolan soon became a world-class trumpeter\, and a world record holding masters athlete. He can blow your socks off in either endeavor. Nolan is a world record holder for his age group in the 800 meters\, 1 mile\, 1500 meters\, and 3000 meters in track and field. As a busy studio musician Nolan was Marvin Gaye’s musical director\, and has played with dozens of major artists including Count Basie\, Natalie Cole\, Stevie Wonder\, Diana Ross\, Phil Collins\, Anita Baker\, Carole King\, Tom Waits\, John Handy\, Aretha Franklin\, Eddie Harris\, Teddy Edwards\, Duke Ellington\, Lionel Hampton\, Jeannie and Jimmy Cheatham\, and Francisco Aquabella. Nolan follows in a long line of great trumpeters which include Clifford Brown\, Lee Morgan\, Freddie Hubbard\, Booker Little\, Harry “Sweets” Edison\, Bobby Bryant\, Snooky Young\, Oscar Brashear\, and Chuck Findley. Nolan has owned and operated a recording studio in Pasadena for the last 20 years making it affordable for local musicians to record. Nolan has great passion for recording other musicians and with his great energy loves to perform jazz the most\, striving for his best\, and enjoying to improvise from scratch. He is a member of Cal State LA Luckman Jazz Orchestra\, and is constantly busy in both playing and recording in the music industry. As an ageless and timeless athlete\, Nolan trains everyday four hours on the trumpet\, and two hours running and training. He follows a strict diet\, and says the key to maintaining good health and longevity is simple\, exercise and watch what you eat. He doesn’t expect to get sick\, but expects excellence in himself. Nolan says the more he runs the better he plays. \nPianist Theo Saunders is a composer\, arranger\, and virtuoso pianist who was born in Manhattan. Influenced by his Russian parents\, who were both actors\, Theo accompanied his mom on piano at many Broadway Show auditions. Theo attended Performing Arts High School\, and got the jazz bug listening to Miles\, Coltrane\, and Monk\, and went on to attend New York University. Theo performed there and in Boston\, Montreal\, Cincinnati\, LA\, and around New York City. Theo played with Jack De Johnette at the Village Van Guard\, played on Bill Evans & George Russell’s album “Living Time”\, played with Jerry Bergonzi’s “Conbrio” group\, with John Klemmer\, Ted Curson\, Willie Bobo\, Freddie Hubbard\, Carla Bley\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Mike Stern\, Sonny Fortune\, Bobby Matos\, and Azar Lawrence. Theo has directed 3 operas\, various dance\, cabaret\, and theatre performances. Theo has collaborated with artists George Herms\, poet David Meltzer\, and the Jazz Tap Ensemble. Theo has toured five continents\, played in over 25 countries with over 125 different musicians\, and over 35 different jazz festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs. Theo plays Latin\, R&B\, rock\, and jazz\, and has recorded 8 CD’s as a leader/co-leader. Theo has played on over 40 recordings as a sideman. One of Theo’s favorite quotes by Van Gogh is “Ignore the obvious\, and exaggerate the essential”. Theo approaches music with spontaneity\, and taking chances. He plays what he hears\, hears into the future as far ahead as possible so the future becomes the present\, the past is created linking it to the future\, in the present! \nBassist Henry Franklin\, affectionately known as “The Skipper” grew up in the heart of LA’s Central Avenue Jazz District. Influenced by his father who was a trumpeter and band leader Henry learned the clarinet\, piano\, tap dancing\, and studied with classical bassists. He was mentored by bassists Al McKibbon\, and George Morrow. Henry cites Paul Chambers and Doug Watkins as bass influences. Henry attended Manual Arts High School\, and first played with the Roy Ayers Latin Jazz Quintet. Henry played with Bill Henderson\, Carl Burnett\, Elmo Jones\, and was in the same company with Ornette Coleman\, Don Cherry\, Billy Higgins\, and Scott Lafaro. Henry’s big heroes are Harold Land\, and Hampton Hawes whom he toured and recorded 5 records with. Henry has played with Willie Bobo\, Archie Shepp\, Lamont Johnson\, Beaver Harris\, and Roswell Rudd. Henry played on the number one hit “Grazing in the Grass” with Hugh Masakela\, and played on Stevie Wonders gold record “Secret Life of Plants”. Henry has performed with dozens of jazz greats including O.C. Smith\, Gene Harris and the 3 Sounds\, Freddie Hubbard\, Bobbi Humphrey\, Count Basie\, Pharoah Sanders\, Azar Lawrence\, John Carter\, Bobby Bradford\, Dennis Gonzales\, Joe Williams\, Sonny Rollins\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Sonny Fortune\, and Milt Jackson. Henry has recorded 29 albums as a leader\, and played on over 100 in total of which many he produced. Henry was a mainstay performing at the Mission Inn in Riverside for 13 years\, and has authored a method book for bassists entitled “Basically Yours”. Henry always strives and works hard to do his best for jazz\, America’s only art form. \nDrummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith at 3 years old began playing the drums under the drumming influence of his father. Raised in Illinois Marvin graduated from the Berklee College of Music\, and began his career playing with jazz greats such as Jon Hendricks\, John Hicks\, Bobby Watson\, Slide Hampton\, Ray Brown\, Frank Wess\, Frank Foster\, Ron Carter\, Hank Jones\, and the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet. Marvin has recorded on over 200 albums\, and has 2 solo albums as a leader. Marvin has worked with Sting\, Dave Holland\, Sonny Rollins\, Willie Nelson\, Steve Coleman\, George Shearing\, the New York Jazz Quartet\, and literally hundreds of jazz musicians. Marvin played on the Tonight Show Band for 15 seasons with Kevin Eubanks and Jay Leno. Marvin is the drummer for Harry Connicks’ TV show “Harry”\, and has been a guest on the KLAC radio show “Loose Cannons”. Marvin has performed with over 25 different jazz groups\, and is a composer\, arranger\, clinician\, and conducts seminars and workshops. Marvin is on the staff of the Banff Center of Fine Arts in Canada\, and the “Drummers Collective” in New York City. Marvin has been called the John Coltrane of the drums. \nSaturday April 22nd at 7:00pm the Azar Lawrence Quintet plays Pete Carlson’s. DESCRIPTION:The quintet includes Lolly Allen on vibes\, Danny Janklow on saxophone\, Jason Richards on bass\, Josh Nelson on piano\, and Paul Kreibich on drums. Band leader and vibist Lolly Allen plays with a tasteful and joyful style that is graceful and fearless. She executes on the vibes with arms flailing and mallets flying often producing a profound and hypnotic effect. A native of New York Lolly received a scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music\, and studied with Danillo Perez\, George Garzone\, Cecil McBee\, John McNeil\, Bevan Manson\, Steve Brown\, Dominic Eads\, and classical percussionist Gordon Stout. Lolly’s musical influences are many which includes Cal Tjadar\, Milt Jackson\, Lionel Hampton\, Gary Burton\, Terry Gibbs\, Stan Getz\, Ellis Rigina\, Errol Garner\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Eddie Palmieri\, J. Coltrane\, C. Parker\, C. Adderley\, T. Monk\, F. Sinatra\, D. Ellington\, and N. Riddle. Lolly has performed with many jazz artists including Bob Mintzer\, Maria Schneider\, Hal Linden\, Charlie Shoemake\, Kristin Korb\, Larry Koonse\, Plas Johnson\, Jigs Whigham\, Kim Richmond\, Gary Smulyan\, Terry Gibbs\, Ricky Woodard\, and the Jazz Composers Alliance. Lolly has played many jazz clubs\, festivals\, and concerts both on the east and west coast. She has played the LA Jazz Societies Vibes Summit\, and at the World Vibes Congress. Lolly’s musical style is a mixture of Milt Jackson\, Walt Dickerson\, and Cal Tjader. Lolly has recorded one CD entitled “Allen Haz Funk”\, and will be releasing her second CD very soon. \nAward winning saxophonist Danny Janklow first played the sax at age 11\, and eventually did his schooling and graduated from Cal State Northridge. Danny is a multi-instrumentalist\, educator\, producer\, and composer who’s playing is soulful\, innovative\, melodic\, and swinging. Danny’s playing is both inspirational and passionate as he plays with an informed intellect and heart-felt spirit. Danny’s high energy style has taken him to Japan\, Holland\, and Mexico. Danny lists his influences as C. Parker\, C. Adderley\, J. Coltrane\, B. Evans\, O. Peterson\, Debussy\, Bach\, D’Angelo\, Radiohead\, and Roy Hargrove. Danny attended Agoura High School\, and was recognized by Wynton Marsalis as the first ever triple instrumentalist awarded Outstanding Soloist for saxophone\, flute\, and clarinet. Danny received a scholarship to Temple Universities’ School of Music\, and was mentored by Dick Oatts and Terell Stafford. Danny won first place in the North America Saxophone Alliance Competition in Georgia\, and won first place at the Detroit Jazz Saxophone Competition. Danny is an in-demand performer and band leader who has played several of the best jazz clubs on the east and west coast including at the Hollywood Bowl. Danny has taught at the Stanford University Jazz Camp\, and was semi-finalist in the T. Monk International Saxophone Competition in Washington D.C.. Danny has worked with Stevie Wonder\, Kendrick Lamar\, Herbie Hancock\, Wayne Shorter\, George Benson\, Aloe Black\, Jose James\, Wynton & Branford Marsalis\, Benny Golson\, Eric Reed\, John Beasley\, Ben Williams\, Jason Moran\, Wallace Roney\, Savion Glover\, Bill Holman\, Gordon Goodwin\, and Jimmy Heath. Danny has recorded one album entitled “Elevation”. \nBassist Jason Richards has performed in many Southern California musical settings. He recorded on Grupo Ayes “Guajiro Del Corazon”\, and has played with Robin Connell\, Lorraina Morro\, the Latin Jazz “Mas Que Nada”. Jason won two consecutive Downbeat student music awards at Western Michigan University. Jason is a member of the eclectic band Homenaje\, and is a member of the Interfaith Jazz at Mount Olives Lutheran Church. Jason has worked with Tom Scott\, Kim Richmond\, Nick Mancini\, James Yoshiza\, Jonathan Rowden\, and Michael Cartwright. \nPianist Josh Nelson is an eclectic\, inspiring\, and brilliant virtuoso on the keyboards. A Southern California native Josh is a composer\, educator\, performer\, and recording artist. Josh’s style can be considered Urbane and Bluesy\, influenced by Oscar Peterson and Gene Harris. Josh has worked with Natalie Cole\, Anthony Wilson\, George Mraz\, Jeff Hamilton\, Richard Galiano\, Benny Golson\, Sheila Jordon\, Greg Hutchinson\, John Clayton\, Seamus Blake\, Matt Wilson\, Sara Garazek\, Dave Koz\, Joe Chambers\, Kurt Elling\, John Pizzarelli\, Lewis Nash\, Peter Erskine\, Tom Scott\, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson\, and Christian Howes. Josh has played on countless albums\, films\, and TV shows making his first recording at the age of 19. Josh has 5 albums as a leader\, and has played on a total of 8 recordings. Josh has appeared on NPR Jazz Night in America\, and plays anything from jazz originals\, standards\, rock\, and science fiction music. He has worked with Michael Kamen\, Eric Idle\, Clint Eastwood\, and Jon Lovitz. Josh has received many music awards\, and scholarships including the Louis Armstrong\, and John Phillip Souza awards. Josh has accompanied vocalist Sara Garazek for 10 years\, has taught at Soka University\, and Cal State Northridge. Josh’s background is a wealth of study and experience. He possess rare musical attributes which include versatility\, touch\, and a true sound of his own that is a clean-burning mode of jazz. \nDrummer Paul Kreibich began playing drums at an early age. He joined the school band at the age of 9\, and studied with Bobby Wrate at the age of 12. Paul became a drum major at Costa Mesa High School\, and soon was playing 5 nights a week on Balboa Island. Paul studied at Berklee School of Music\, and with Forest Clark at Orange Coast College. Paul spent 2 years with the Vince Wallace Quintet\, played in the Continental Circus\, and toured with vocalist Carmen McRae in Japan\, and throughout the U.S. including a stop at Carnegie Hall. Paul studied with Fred Gruber at LA City College\, and performed with the Ray Charles Band for 4 years. Paul has toured with Mose Allison\, Red Rodney\, Woody Herman\, Anita O’Day\, Jeff Hamilton\, Joe Pass\, Charles Brown\, Rosemary Clooney\, and Lee Konitz. Paul has played on over 60 recordings with literally hundreds of jazz greats. Paul played with the Gene Harris Band for 6 years\, and has taught at USC\, Valley College\, and currently at Cal State Fullerton. Paul is a great listener\, and always plays with simpatico. He is a tasty brush player\, and compliments any group marvelously with his crisp\, rhythmic attack\, and well executed licks. Paul plays with a swinging\, powerful style that has a loose\, groovy feel. Paul is always supportive\, amiable\, and personable. DESCRIPTION:The quartet includes Mike Wofford on piano\, Holly Hofmann on flute\, Marshall Hawkins on bass\, and Duncan Moore on drums. Pianist Mike Wofford\, a native of Texas\, has lived and performed in the San Diego area for most of his life. He began playing the piano at the age of 7\, and was influenced by his mom who was a professional singer. At age 19 Mike entered into the LA jazz scene in the early 1960’s. He first broke in with the Lighthouse All-Stars\, and continued to play with many of the west coast jazz players including Teddy Edwards\, Art Pepper\, Red Norvo\, Chet Baker\, Bud Shank\, Zoot Sims\, Shorty Rogers\, Maynard Ferguson\, June Christy\, Mel Torme\, Gary Burton\, and Joe Pass. Mike oversaw the music for the Bill Cosby Show with Quincy Jones\, and worked with Oliver Nelson at Universal Pictures. Mike was an arranger for Capitol Records for Sergio Mendez\, Mike Barone\, Roger McGuinn of “The Byrds”\, John Lennon\, The Jackson 5\, Tom Scott\, Joan Baez\, and Harry Nillson. Mike was in Shelly Manne’s jazz group for 16 years\, and worked with Lee Konitz\, Harry “Sweets” Edison\, and Benny Carter. Mike was musical director for Sarah Vaughn\, and Ella Fitzgerald\, and was the house pianist at San Diego’s “Elarios” and the “Horton Grand Hotel”. Mike has worked with dozens of other jazz greats\, has led his own trio\, quartet\, and has arranged the music of Jobim\, and Ellington and Strayhorn for string orchestras. Mike’s piano influences are many which include T. Monk\, H. Silver\, S. Clark\, H. Nichols\, D. Ellington\, J. Rowles\, R. Twardzik\, G. Gould\, B. Evans\, C. Taylor\, P. Bley\, and A. Tatum. Mike is a musicians’ pianist who inspires as he plays\, and as he absorbs what he hears develops his own sound. This is the very definition of a jazz musician. Mike has played on over 200 recordings as a sideman\, made 17 recordings as a leader\, won San Diego’s Lifetime Achievement Award\, and is the director of the Annual Oregon Coast Jazz Party in October. \nFlutist Holly Hofmann began playing at the age of 5\, and was influenced by her father who was a jazz guitarist. Holly learned standards from the Great American Songbook\, and after studying classical music for many years began to work with renowned jazz musicians like Ray Brown\, Frank Wess\, Cedar Walton\, and Kenny Barron. Holly studied with Cleveland orchestra flutist Maurice Sharp\, received her Bachelors’ Degree from Cleveland Institute of Music\, and her Masters’ Degree from University of Northern Colorado. Holly has played in the San Diego area since the late 1980’s and booked a National Jazz Series at the Horton Grand Hotel with artists like Diana Krall\, Tommy Flanagan\, Joe Henderson\, and Benny Carter. In the 1990’s Holly recorded and played with Bill Cunliffe\, Ray Brown\, and Victor Lewis. In 2001 Holly married Mike Wofford\, and has played in different musical formats with artists like Peter Washington\, Ali Ryerson\, Ben Riley\, and Terell Stafford. Holly was a member of the Flutology All-Star Sextet\, and has recently recorded with John Clayton\, Jeff Hamilton\, and Anthony Wilson. Holly’s playing has been described as having note perfect accuracy\, and in the moment fluidity. Holly gives Master classes at schools and universities\, and provides clinics in middle schools and high schools in the U.S.. Holly is on the board of directors at the Keynote Jazz Foundation\, has made 12 recordings as a leader\, and along with Hubert Laws is considered one of the premiere jazz flute players today. Holly is the standard by which the jazz flute is judged. \nBassist Marshall Hawkins is a multi-instrumentalist who also plays piano\, organ\, and drums. Marshall won honors for playing the upright piano at the age of 12\, and growing up in Washington D.C. began advancing in music very rapidly. Marshall played with Miles Davis’ Second Great Quartet that included Wayne Shorter\, Herbie Hancock\, and Tony Williams. Since 1985 Marshall has taught at the Idyllwild School of Music and Arts Academy. Since its inception Marshall has been the jazz department head and director of the Three Day Jazz in the Pines festival held in August. Marshall has played with the Harry Pickens Trio\, and has recorded 4 CDs as a leader. Marshall has played with Shirley Horn\, Roberta Flack\, Donny Hathaway\, the Manhattan Transfer\, Eddie Jefferson\, Richie Cole\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, and Pharoah Sanders. Marshall has played on 40 recordings in his career\, and is renowned by his music students. Teaching kids jazz is Marshall’s passion. Marshall has brought jazz to elementary school students\, and established a non-profit organization that educates young people in jazz. Marshall established the Seahawk Modern Jazz Orchestra that helps nurture young musicians to learn and perform jazz music. \nDrummer Duncan Moore is a percussionist who plays a wide range of music that includes jazz\, Latin\, rock\, and R&B. Duncan has worked as a studio musician and recorded jingles\, soundtracks\, and various projects. Duncan began playing the drums at the age of 8 in Iowa\, and majored in music at the University of Iowa under Tom Davis. He eventually moved to San Diego\, and has performed and recorded with nearly 100 national and local artists. Duncan is an instructor at Mira Costa College\, and UC San Diego\, teaches at jazz camps\, and gives clinics. Henry has played with Willie Bobo\, Archie Shepp\, Lamont Johnson\, Beaver Harris\, and Roswell Rudd. Henry played on the number one hit “Grazing in the Grass” with Hugh Masakela\, and played on Stevie Wonders gold record “Secret Life of Plants”. Henry has performed with dozens of jazz greats including O.C. Smith\, Gene Harris and the 3 Sounds\, Freddie Hubbard\, Bobbi Humphrey\, Count Basie\, Pharoh Sanders\, Azar Lawrence\, John Carter\, Bobby Bradford\, Dennis Gonzales\, Joe Williams\, Sonny Rollins\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Sonny Fortune\, and Milt Jackson. Henry has recorded 29 albums as a leader\, and played on over 100 in total of which many he produced. Theo has directed 3 operas\, various dance\, cabaret\, and theatre performances. Theo has collaborated with artists George Herms\, poet David Meltzer\, and the Jazz Tap Ensemble. Curtis has recorded on vocalist Gregory Porter’s 2 CD’s “Water”\, and “Liquid Spirit” which won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocals. Currently Curtis is based in San Diego where he is an educator\, clinician\, and lecturer. \nDrummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith at 3 years old began playing the drums under the drumming influence of his father. Raised in Illinois Marvin graduated from the Berklee College of Music\, and began his career playing with jazz greats such as Jon Hendricks\, John Hicks\, Bobby Watson\, Slide Hampton\, Ray Brown\, Frank Wess\, Frank Foster\, Ron Carter\, Hank Jones\, and the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet. Marvin has recorded on over 200 albums\, and has 2 solo albums as a leader. Marvin has worked with Sting\, Dave Holland\, Sonny Rollins\, Willie Nelson\, Steve Coleman\, George Shearing\, the New York Jazz Quartet\, and literally hundreds of jazz musicians. Marvin played on the Tonight Show Band for 15 seasons with Kevin Eubanks and Jay Leno. Marvin is the drummer for Harry Connicks’ TV show “Harry”\, and has been a guest on the KLAC radio show “Loose Cannons”. Marvin has performed with over 25 different jazz groups\, and is a composer\, arranger\, clinician\, and conducts seminars and workshops. Marvin is on the staff of the Banff Center of Fine Arts in Canada\, and the “Drummers Collective” in New York City. Marvin has been called the John Coltrane of the drums. \nBig Black is a rhythmic master of hand drumming\, he has been called the “Papa Joe Jones of hand drumming”. He is an actor\, teacher\, and jazz-afro conga drummer who has influenced music over the last 50 years. Big Black has played with Dizzy Gillespie\, Randy Weston\, B.B. Currently Curtis is based in San Diego where he is an educator\, clinician\, and lecturer. \nDrummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith at 3 years old began playing the drums under the drumming influence of his father. Raised in Illinois Marvin graduated from the Berklee College of Music\, and began his career playing with jazz greats such as Jon Hendricks\, John Hicks\, Bobby Watson\, Slide Hampton\, Ray Brown\, Frank Wess\, Frank Foster\, Ron Carter\, Hank Jones\, and the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet. Marvin has recorded on over 200 albums\, and has 2 solo albums as a leader. Marvin has worked with Sting\, Dave Holland\, Sonny Rollins\, Willie Nelson\, Steve Coleman\, George Shearing\, the New York Jazz Quartet\, and literally hundreds of jazz musicians. Marvin played on the Tonight Show Band for 15 seasons with Kevin Eubanks and Jay Leno. Marvin is the drummer for Harry Connicks’ TV show “Harry”\, and has been a guest on the KLAC radio show “Loose Cannons”. Marvin has performed with over 25 different jazz groups\, and is a composer\, arranger\, clinician\, and conducts seminars and workshops. Marvin is on the staff of the Banff Center of Fine Arts in Canada\, and the “Drummers Collective” in New York City. Marvin has been called the John Coltrane of the drums. \nBig Black is a rhythmic master of hand drumming\, he has been called the “Papa Joe Jones of hand drumming”. Bill won the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Arrangement. Bill has received 5 Grammy nominations and 2 Emmy nominations for his arrangements. Bill is comfortable as a soloist\, with his trio\, big band\, and classical jazz ensemble. Bill has been a leader\, side man\, and soloist with symphony orchestras\, and has been a leader/co-leader on 25 recordings. He has worked with Buddy Rich\, Frank Sinatra\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Benny Golson\, James Moody\, and many jazz greats. Brandon has played on 8 film scores\, and played on the recording of the 2002 Latin Jazz Album of the Year by Alejandro Sanz\, “Y Solo Se Me O Corre A Marte”. Brandon also played on the 2005 Grammy Award winning album by Ray Charles “Genius Loves Company”. Influenced by saxophonist Dave Sanborn\, Brandon has toured with George Benson\, Kenny Loggins\, the Rippingtons\, Earth\, Wind\, & Fire\, and Dave Weckl. \nTrumpeter Kye Palmer is a long time LA studio player who played with Kevin Eubanks band of the “Tonight Show” for four years. Kye has played on several Grammy Award nominated and winning projects over the last 20 years. Kye attended the Stan Kenton Band Clinic as a youth\, and studied at University of Redlands\, Cal State Long Beach\, and Fullerton College. Kye has received the “Downbeat” Award for the winning “Time Tripping”\, and also played classical Bach music at Cal Poly Pomona. Kye has authored jazz trumpet improvisation articles for “International Trumpet Guild”\, and has played on 23 recordings. \nTrombonist Francisco Torres is an arranger\, composer\, educator\, and musical director for Pancho Sanchez. Francisco has worked with Gordon Goodwin\, John Beasley\, Claire Fischer\, and has been part of several Grammy Award winning records. Francisco has been on five nominations for Grammy and Latin Grammy Best Latin Jazz Album. Francisco has played on over 50 recordings with over 50 different groups. He has played on 5 film scores\, with 10 different LA big bands\, and on many TV and award shows. Francisco is the director of the SCSBOA High School All-Star Band. Francisco has been commissioned to compose for high schools and universities\, and with many of LA’s best Latin jazz musicians\, helped Jose Rizo create and conceive “Jazz on the Latin Side All-Star Band”. \nBassist John Belzaguy has been a sideman on 35 recordings. He has played with the Latin jazz group “Yoboso”\, Fred Hersch\, Howard McGee\, and many southern California vocalists and jazz groups. John was influenced by bassist Paul Chambers and Percy Heath. John is a solid\, experienced accompanist who is comfortable to play with diverse musical artists. \nDrummer Ray Brinker received his Bachelors’ Degree from North Texas State University\, and was a member of the Grammy Award nominated “One ‘o’ Clock Lab Big Band”. Ray has toured with Maynard Ferguson\, and is a founding 23 year member of Tierney Sutton’s Band. Ray has co-arranged and recorded 10 CDs and has been a part of 5 Grammy nominations for Best Vocal Jazz Album. Ray received a Grammy nomination as a co-arranger for Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist. Ray plays in the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band\, and has played as a sideman with over 30 different musical groups that includes jazz\, pop\, and rock. SUMMARY:COLTRANE’S SOUND PROJECT QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:The Coltrane Sound Project Quartet consists of Darek Oles on bass\, Ralph Moore on saxophone\, Eric Reed on piano\, and Christian Euman on drums. The quartet will play all John Coltrane compositions\, and arrangements of standards from the early Coltrane Quartet period. This year marks 50 years commemorating Coltrane’s passing\, and is the 90 year anniversary of his life. John Coltrane changed music literally\, enriching and influencing this quartet\, and millions of fans and musicians world-wide. \nBassist and composer Darek Oles is a protégé of bassist Charlie Haden. Darek grew up in Poland\, and began playing music at the age of 5. He won numerous awards as a junior musician\, and toured with many of Poland’s best jazz groups. He has been performing over 20 years\, and is a member of the LA Jazz Quartet. Darek has played with Brad Mehldau\, Larry Koonse\, Peter Erskine\, Alan Pasqua\, Bob McChesney\, Kait Dunton\, and numerous jazz greats. Darek follows the musical lineage of Scott Lafaro\, Bill Evans\, Charlie Haden\, and Gary Peacock. Darek has played on over 100 recordings\, and performed in hundreds of concerts around the world. Some of Darek’s musical collaborations have received Grammy nominations. Darek was voted Poland’s Best Jazz Musician of the Year\, and voted Best Acoustic Bassist by “Jazz Forum”\, a European magazine. Darek has taught at Cal Institute of Arts\, UC Irvine\, and USC’s Thornton School of Music. \nSaxophonist Ralph Moore began playing the trumpet at the age of 13\, and later switched to saxophone and won several music awards with his high school jazz orchestra. Ralph studied at Berklee School of Music\, and received the Lenny Johnson Memorial Award for Most Outstanding Musician. Ralph has played with Horace Silver\, Roy Haynes\, The Mingus Dynasty\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Freddie Hubbard\, Kevin Eubanks\, James Williams\, Bill Mays\, Valery Ponomarev\, Roy Hargrove\, Jimmy Knepper\, Brian Lynch\, J.J. Johnson\, Ray Brown\, Bobby Hutcherson\, and Kenny Barron. Ralph has recorded 6 CDs as a leader\, and played on 6 others as a sideman. Influenced by John Coltrane\, Ralph was also a member of the Tonight Show Jazz Orchestra. \nPianist Eric Reed has played with the highest integrity over the last 25 years as a leader of numerous ensembles. Eric is a soloist\, composer\, producer\, educator\, and sideman. Eric always brings fresh ideas\, virtuoso chops\, intellectual clarity\, and an unwavering will to groove in any musical setting. Eric has recorded 3 Thelonious Monk projects\, conveying the authentic\, harmonic\, and melodic variety of Monks’ music. Eric plays original compositions\, biblical themes\, popular songs\, jazz classics\, gospels\, hymns\, and spirituals expressing a wide variety of musical styles. Eric sees his musical influences all as a stream of consciousness\, tying all his musical experiences together. Eric began his playing in the Baptist church\, and was inspired by the singing and dancing of fellow church goers. He began playing piano at the age of 5\, and listened to every kind of music being played by his parents and siblings at home. He heard the music of Horace Silver\, Art Blakey\, and Dave Brubeck which sparked his interest in jazz. At the age of 11 he educated himself on peoples’ biographies\, books on music theory\, and vinyl records. Eric studied at the Colburn School of Performing Arts under Jeff Lavner. Eric received a master class from Wynton Marsalis in 1986\, and studied improvisation under Harold Battiste Jr. who nurtured him and took him to music clubs all over LA. Wynton Marsalis considered Eric a phenomenal talent with extreme ability. Eric won many local music competitions in his late teens\, and worked with Teddy Edwards\, Buddy Collette\, Clora Bryant\, Billy Higgins\, Gerald Wilson\, and the Clayton brothers. Eric studied at Cal State Northridge\, and played in Wynton Marsalis’ group in 1990 for nearly 2 decades. Eric worked at Bradley’s legendary Piano Saloon in New York\, and in 1999 scored Eddie Murphy’s film “Life”. Eric worked on TV and film soundtracks and produced “Jazz Composer Portraits” for Manhattan’s Miller Theatre. For 3 years he performed the music of Elmo Hope\, Donald Brown\, James Black\, Eric Dolphy\, Ben Wolff\, and Billy Strayhorn. Eric embraces the songbooks of composers\, and draws from these sources to find his own compositional voice. He incorporates his improvisational ideas into his writing for other musicians to interpret. Eric has taught at the Julliard School of Music\, the New School\, and the Manhattan School of Music. He has mentored the talents of Aaron Diehl\, and Kris Bowers. Eric considers the bandstand is where musicians truly learn to play music. He feels blessed he was embraced by many of the old guard music mentors. Eric directed Regina Taylor’s musical “Crowns”\, played with the LA Gospel Messengers formed by Rev. James Cleveland\, and has served as a minister of music which has deepened his spiritual connection to God. Eric has played with bassist Buster Williams and the group “Something More”\, and continues to evolve as a spiritual and musical being offering to help young artists to manifest their inner-most self through music. Eric looks to the future to offer up something he has never done before. He has recorded 26 CDs to date. \nDrummer\, composer\, and educator Christian Euman is a graduate of Western Michigan University\, and studied at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. He has studied and performed with Herbie Hancock\, Wayne Shorter\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Chris Potter\, James Newton\, Kenny Burrell\, Jimmy Heath\, and Stephon Harris. Christian has performed and toured with Kurt Elling\, Billy Childs\, Walter Smith III\, Geoffrey Keezer\, Hal Crook\, Lewis Nash\, Jamire Williams\, Joe LaBarbera\, Bob Sheppard\, and many others around the world. Christian leads his own octet\, and double drums ensemble “Drums and Symbols”. Christian was raised in Chicago\, started playing at the age of 4\, and was influenced to play jazz after hearing Art Blakey’s “Mosaic” album\, which taught him to pursue creativity and freedom in his playing. Christian received many high school awards in Illinois\, and performed in the live production of “Hair Spray”. Christian has performed\, arranged\, and composed for Donny McCaslin\, Edward Simon\, Tim Hagans\, The New York Voices\, Robert Glasper\, and Kris Bowers. Christian placed second in the Percussive Arts Society International Drum Set Competition selected by drummers Peter Erskine\, Ed Soph\, Matt Wilson\, Stanton Moore\, and Jeff Hamilton. Leader and vibist Charlie Shoemake played the piano at the age of 6\, and was a talented high school and college baseball player who chose music over sports. Charlie moved to Los Angeles in 1956 to master the concepts of the jazz be-bop idols of the 1950’s. Charlie studied harmony with pianist Jimmy Rowles\, and did a lot of studio and commercial playing in the 60’s. During this time he met his wife Sandy. He was inspired by vibist Victor Feldman\, and did some studio work for Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin. In 1966 Charlie heard George Shearing at Shelly’s Manne Hole and was invited to join the group\, touring for the next 7 years. For the following 18 years Charlie and his wife Sandy raised their son\, and he mentored music students at his jazz improvisation school\, teaching over 1500 students\, many of whom became successful\, professional jazz musicians. Charlie performed over 500 concerts in the next 12 years\, and played in Clint Eastwood’s movie “Bird”. Charlie eventually formed the Central Coast Jazz Institute\, a 501C3 non-profit\, where a group of his students were named “Best Community College Jazz Group in the U.S.” by “Downbeat Magazine”. Charlie is considered one of the most successful jazz improvisation teachers in Southern California’s history. Charlie is a top-notch composer\, and considered one of the great major voices of the jazz vibraphone. Charlie feels fortunate to have played with many of the greatest jazz musicians in his career\, and the continuing achievement of his former students are most meaningful to him. Charlie has recorded 19 albums as a leader/co-leader. \nVocalist Sandy Shoemake grew up singing in choirs\, her fathers’ band\, and at LA City College’s “A Band” as the featured vocalist with musicians like Bob Florence\, Jim Hall\, Gary Peacock\, and Lee Morgan. Sandy sang with Sy Zentner’s Orchestra at the Hollywood Palladium\, and did studio work on TV variety shows\, commercials\, and the three TV networks\, NBC\, CBS\, and ABC. Sandy performed on the TV shows of Andy Williams\, Jerry Lewis\, Red Skeleton\, with the Lennon Sisters\, Jimmy Durante\, Bing Crosby\, Doris Day\, Dean Martin\, and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Song stylist that Sandy admires are Connie Boswell\, Helen Forrest\, Doris Day\, Sarah Vaughn\, Jackie Cain\, Frank Sinatra\, Dick Haynes\, David Allyn\, and Billy Eckstine. Sandy sings with warmth\, imagination\, and beautiful phrasing. She is a fine interpreter of ballads having recorded 3 solo albums. \nGuitarist\, composer\, educator\, and arranger Frank Potenza\, a protégé of Joe Pass\, has recorded 9 solo albums\, and played on 13 as a sideman. Frank has worked with Dizzy Gillespie\, George Van Epps\, Bud Shank\, Mose Allison\, James Moody\, Harry “Sweets” Edison\, Jack McDuff\, and Gene Harris. Frank received a Bachelors’ Degree from Berklee College of Music\, and a Masters’ Degree from Cal State LA. Frank has authored 2 books on fingerboard mastery “Scales”\, and “Arpeggios”\, and currently teaches jazz studies at USC Thornton School of Music. Frank has studied with some great jazz and classical teachers\, and regularly gives lectures\, seminars\, and master classes. \nOrganist/Keyboardist Joe Bagg has been nominated year after year by the “Downbeat Magazine” Critics Poll for top organists. Joe is an inventive and highly refined player who’s light playing touch\, and great ears for listening elevates any musical setting he plays in. Joe performed on Clint Eastwood’s film “Jersey Boys”\, and currently plays with the LA Jazz Collective\, and Option 3 jazz groups. Joe’s first instrument was the xylophone which he learned by ear as a youth. He later studied with pianist Kenny Barron\, and received a Masters’ Degree at Rutgers University. Joe has played or recorded with nearly every jazz musician in Southern California. Joe’s talents include being a Russian Linguist in the army in Germany\, and right after took up the organ influenced by organist Larry Golding. For the last 20 years Joe has played with dozens of jazz greats all over the U.S.\, and overseas. Joe has played on 12 CD recordings. \nBassist Luther Hughes leads 3 different jazz groups including the Cannonball/Coltrane Project. Luther is a record producer\, and music publisher who founded Primrose Lane Music. Luther currently teaches at Cal State Fullerton\, and Saddleback College. Luther did his music training at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music\, and Long Beach City College. Luther received his music degree from Cal State Long Beach. In his 30 plus year career\, Luther has played and recorded with hundreds of jazz greats. He was a member of the Gene Harris Quartet for over 20 years\, producing over 30 recordings. Luther has been a member of the Ron Eschete Trio\, the Charlie Shoemake Quartet\, and played with vocalist Dewey Erney. Luther has played numerous jazz festivals\, with several jazz big bands\, many pop\, rock\, and country artists\, performed on live stage and theatre\, on TV and film soundtracks\, and has broadcasted live jazz on the radio. Luther has studied with many classical teachers\, and taught jazz at several major colleges. Luther has played on over 90 recordings to date. \nDrummer Paul Kreibich began the drums at age 9\, playing in Costa Mesa\, and on Balboa Island. Paul has studied at Berklee College of Music\, and Orange Coast College\, studying with Forest Clarke. Paul’s early career began with the Vince Wallace Quintet\, and he played in the Continental Circus. Paul toured with vocalist Carmen McRae\, studied with Fred Gruber at LA City College\, and later toured Japan playing with Ray Charles for four years. Paul has played with dozens of jazz greats and played on over 60 CD recordings\, including the Gene Harris Quartet. Paul currently teaches at Cal State Fullerton\, and has taught at USC and Valley College. Paul has 2 CDs as a leader\, and always listens to his band members’ well\, complimenting them with his crisp playing. Paul always swings with a powerful sound\, but maintains a loose\, groovy feel\, with sharp rhythms\, and well executed licks. Pauls’ personality is supportive\, amiable\, and personable. He is a regular member of the Cannonball/Coltrane Project.

Kim has played with the big bands of Stan Kenton\, Louie Bellson\, Bob Florence\, Bill Holman\, Vinny Golia\, just to name a few. Kim leads his own concert jazz orchestra which is a workshop for his own writing\, conducting\, and leading his own ensemble as a platform for free-form expression and improvisation. Kim taught for 12 years in the USC Jazz Studies Department\, Cal Institute of Arts\, Cal State Fullerton\, and many jazz camps and clinics. Kim is the president of the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers providing master classes and music education for all levels. Kim expresses his unique\, original voice with extensive experience and new sounds in the evolving musical world. Kim is a lecturer\, conductor\, and guest soloist at college music festivals and workshops. Kim has written over 100 compositions for small and large ensembles\, and chamber orchestras. Kim has made 10 recordings as a leader\, 6 as a producer\, 23 as an arranger\, and 76 as a sideman. \nTrumpeter Clay Jenkins is the co-leader of this 7-piece ensemble with Kim Richmond. Clay has worked with the big bands of Stan Kenton\, Harry James\, Buddy Rich\, Count Basie\, and the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Clay has studied with trumpet teachers James Stamp\, John Haynie\, Boyd Hood\, and Uan Rasey. Clay studied at North Texas State\, and received his Masters at USC. Clay has taught at USC\, Cal State Northridge\, Cal Institute of Arts\, Colburn School of Performing Arts\, and the Foundation for the Junior Blind. He currently teaches at Eastman School of Music. Clay has played with dozens of jazz greats\, and made several recordings with Joe LaBarbera\, the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, Bill Perkins\, Kim Richmond\, and over 50 recordings in total. Clay has arranged and composed on a dozen recordings and performs and gives clinics all over the world. \nTrombonist Ido Meshulam is a graduate of Berklee School of Music\, Herb Alperts School of Music at UCLA\, and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. Ido has appeared on the jazz recording “Infinite Winds” and has trained with top jazz masters. Ido is a young and upcoming talent with his own original sound. \nGuitarist Will Brahm is a graduate of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music School at Cal State Long Beach. Will is a five time K-jazz scholarship recipient. Will is the leader of the band “Homenaje”\, and he tours internationally with the “New West Guitar Group”. Will has recorded 2 albums\, one with his own trio\, and one entitled “Heart Quake” with bassist Katie Thiroux and drummer Matt Wittek. Will gives music clinics\, teaches master classes\, and performs concerts for students and schools. Will is a versatile and talented musician. \nPianist Daniel Szabo began playing piano at the age of 4 in Hungary. Daniel has won prizes in Lithuania\, Hungary\, and the Best Piano Solo Award at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Daniel has played at the IAJE Conference in New York City\, and studied at the Henry Mancini Institute\, and New England Conservatory as a Fullbright Scholar. Daniel has studied with Bob Brookmeyer\, Danilo Perez\, Jerry Bergonzi\, Vince Mendoza\, Peter Erskine\, Bruce Broughton\, and Steven Hartke. Daniel has played with dozens of jazz greats and won the Martial Solal Jazz Piano Competition. Daniel has received high praise from “Downbeat”\, “All About Jazz”\, “Modern Drummer”\, and “New York City Records”. Daniel has toured world-wide and works regularly with singers\, actors\, poets\, dancers\, theatrical directors\, and film makers as a composer\, improviser\, arranger\, and song writer. Daniel’s unique voice can be heard in his playing and improvising on boundary crossing compositions. Daniel trained at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest Hungary\, and holds a Doctorate in jazz piano\, classical composition\, and film scoring. Daniel lectures at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Daniel has recorded 4 CD’s. \nBassist Jordan Richards plays in many types of music settings on the Southern California scene. He plays in jazz duos\, he has accompanied Lorraina Marro\, and plays in the Latin Jazz group “Mas Que Nada”. Jordan has studied at Western Michigan University\, and The Berklee School of Music\, and has won 2 “Downbeat” student music awards for bass. Jordan plays in the band “Roll Call Quartet” and the “Homenaje Jazz Trio”. Ernie broke in with the Buddy Rich Big Band\, did a U.S. State Department tour of Africa with the Oliver Nelson Big Band\, and performed with Gerald Wilson’s Big Band\, and Thelonious Monk. Ernie was a member of Doc Severinsen’s Tonight Show Band for 20 years. Ernie recorded on Marvin Gaye’s Motown albums\, has recorded with The Jackson Five\, Barbara Streisand\, Neil Diamond\, Christopher Cross\, The Four Tops\, The Commodores\, The Temptations\, Diana Ross\, and Frank Sinatra. Ernie has played on countless pop and R&B sessions\, and has been the first call saxophonist for over 20 years for the LA studios. Ernie performed on the film soundtracks for “Grease”\, “The Color Purple”\, and “Night Court”. Ernie won the 7th Annual Independent Music Awards for Best Jazz Album\, and performed on Kurt Ellings’ Grammy Award winning Best Jazz Vocal Album. Ernie currently tours with two different jazz quartets\, one in the U.S.\, and one in Europe. Ernie has toured and recorded for over 30 years in every kind of music setting. He founded “Flying Dolphin Records” where he can produce and record music on his own terms with a new sense of freedom. Ernie has recorded 20 albums as a leader\, and appeared on over 1500 recordings in his career\, ranging from Cannonball Adderley to Frank Zappa. Out of 32 musicians Ernie is one of only 6 jazz musicians to ever win the Frankfurt Music Prize. As a classically trained musician Ernie is mostly influenced by Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Ernie has played on countless TV shows and soundtrack recordings with such great artists as Aretha Franklin\, Steely Dan\, and Pat Matheny. Ernie has recorded both in Japan and Europe\, and been a featured artist with the WDR Big Band\, and the Croatia\, Slovenia\, and Siberian Jazz Orchestras. Ernie has recorded with Dr. L. Subramaniam\, with Corky Siegels Chamber Blues Band\, performed at the Kennedy Center\, with the Australia and LA Symphonies\, and gives clinics and master classes when possible. Ernie feels music has the potential to bring people together in peace and harmony. He feels all things in the physical world has vibration\, and the music that Ernie plays has an energy and vibration that touches people. Ernie feels music is God singing through us with an energy used for good. \nPianist Mark Seales won the Ear Shot Jazz Golden Ear Award for Best Instrumentation. Mark is a University of Washington professor who teaches jazz workshops\, and has performed with Benny Carter\, Howard Roberts\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Mark Murphy\, Art Pepper\, and Joe Henderson. Mark has appeared on 13 CD’s\, and has been a regular on the north-west jazz scene for over 2 decades. Mark has played internationally with his mentor Donlan Phere. Mark is most influenced by Herbie Hancock\, Charlie Parker\, John Lewis\, John Coltrane\, Miles Davis\, and Wynton Kelly. He was also mentored by Floyd Standifer\, and is known for playing “meaty” solos. \nBassist Bruce Lett was educated in Indiana\, and at North Texas State. He currently teaches jazz at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State Long Beach. Bruce has toured with Gerry Mulligan\, Alfonse Mouzon\, and Nancy Wilson. Bruce has played with the Bill Holman\, Terry Gibbs\, Jack Sheldon\, and Stan Kenton Jazz Big Bands\, and has played at the Monterey\, Playboy\, and Cancun Jazz Festivals. Bruce has played on Bette Midler’s film “For the Boys”\, recorded countless commercials\, and recorded on several TV and film soundtracks. Bruce has appeared on 19 CD’s in his career. \nDrummer Bob Leatherbarrow attended the Berklee School of Music\, and has played with many jazz and pop artists. Bob also has played vibes backing vocalist Peggy Lee. Bob also leads his own group entitled Polychrome. Bob has composed and played on many film\, TV\, commercial soundtracks\, and live TV and award shows. Bob gives jazz clinics\, and has appeared on 20 CD recordings. Bassist Luther Hughes studied at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music\, and Long Beach City College. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Long Beach State. Luther’s credits include leading the Cannonball/Coltrane Project\, produced and recorded 4 albums as a group\, and created the music publishing company Primrose Lane Music founded in 2004. Hughes has produced 10 albums\, appeared on 33 recordings with jazz artists like Ron Eschete\, Charlie Shoemake\, Dave Pike\, and Dewey Erney. Luther currently teaches at Cal State Fullerton\, and Saddleback College\, and has taught at Cal State Long Beach\, Golden West College\, Musicians Institute in Hollywood\, Rio Hondo College\, Fullerton College\, Vanguard University\, and was the Southern California Director for Bruce Forman’s Jazz Masters Workshop. Hughes has performed or recorded with 100’s of jazz greats\, and over a dozen pop\, rock\, and country greats. Luther was a long time bassist with the Gene Harris Quartet appearing on 23 recordings over a span of 30 years. Hughes has performed with 9 different jazz big bands\, and has recorded and performed on over a dozen stage\, film\, and TV scores. Luther has played on the soundtracks of “Star Trek”\, “Deep Space Nine”\, and “Boston Legal”. Hughes has studied with teachers of the Boston Pops\, the London & Chicago Symphonies\, the LA Chamber Orchestra\, and cellists from LA studios\, Cal State Long Beach\, and Long Beach City College. Luther has performed in over a dozen major jazz festivals\, cruises\, and party’s in the U.S. and around the world\, and has hosted jazz radio broadcasts on 88.1 FM in Long Beach. \nPianist\, vocalist\, and composer John Proulx is highly regarded by his jazz peers as a talented musician who brings a new\, fresh energy to jazz standards. John has strong musicianship\, singing and playing the melody and lyric of a song with great intonation\, mellow swing\, and a soothing vibrato. Proulx is a reminder of Chet Baker\, singing and playing beautifully with imagination\, and a natural talent that is a joy to hear. John performs in a hot and swinging style with a cool smoothness. Proulx has made 4 recordings as a leader\, garnering national and international claim. John has recorded or performed with dozens of jazz greats\, and is a Grammy winning composer for Nancy Wilson’s CD “Turned to Blue”. Proulx’s compositions have been recorded by Mary Stallings\, Deana Martin\, Melissa Manchester\, and Al Jarreau. John began playing the violin at the age of 3\, and then switched to classical piano. Proulx’s grandfather was Clyde Proulx\, a jazz guitarist\, who played with Clyde McCoy’s Big Band\, and introduced him to jazz. John became hooked on the freedom of improvisation\, and studied at Roosevelt University’s Chicago School of Performing Arts. Proulx is one of LA’s great talents performing on the jazz scene for the past 15 years. \nGuitarist Barry Zweig is a skilled accompanist and soloist\, and one of LA’s most respected jazz musicians. Barry began playing the Ukelele at the age of 8\, and also played the violin until he was 18. At the age of 15 he heard jazz great Dave Pell’s song “Mountain Greenery” that had both jazz and classical elements\, and said\, “I could do that”\, and purchased his first guitar for $10.00. Serving in the Army Barry studied with legendary guitarist Jimmy Smith\, and once reentering civilian life joined Buddy Rich’s band. He played on 2 of Buddy Rich’s albums’\, one with Sammy Davis Jr. who liked Barry’s playing and hired him. His tour with Sammy Davis Jr. lasted over a year. Since the 60’s Barry has played or recorded with dozens of vocalists\, and jazz greats. Zweig was the guitarist for 6 years on Dinah Shore’s TV Show. Barry has taught at UCLA\, USC\, and University of Texas El Paso. He currently teaches at his private North Hollywood studio. Barry’s mellow style brings out the substance and lyrical beauty of a song making every tune a delight. He is a master that tells the listener the joy he feels telling a story without words. Barry has played on over 30 recordings in his career since the mid 60’s.

DESCRIPTION:Tom Scott and the LA Express was one of the early 70’s first funk jazz bands. Tom recreated this band with a current group that includes outstanding new personnel to perform the bands original repetoire. The quintet consists of leader Tom Scott on saxophones\, Mahesh Balasooriya on keyboards\, Andrew Synowiec on guitar\, Chris Colangelo on bass\, and Gary Novak on drums. Tom Scott is a veteran composer\, arranger\, producer\, musical director\, and saxophonist who has earned 3 Grammy’s and 14 Grammy Nominations over 4 decades. Tom’s first recording as a leader came in 1968 at the age of 20. Tom has made 35 solo recordings to date\, and his music has been played by dozens of recording artists that include Tupac\, Madonna\, Bruno Mars\, Snoop Dog\, Massive Attack\, Wu-Tang Clan\, N.W.A\, and the Chemical Brothers. Tom has played on over 500 recordings as a guest artist with diverse artists like Barbara Streisand\, Quincy Jones\, Thelonious Monk\, The Blues Brothers\, Frank Sinatra\, Aretha Franklin\, and Aerosmith. Tom has been a player and arranger for Joni Mitchell\, Steely Dan\, Carol King\, Paul McCartney\, Rod Stewart\, Blondie\, Captain and Tennille\, Whitney Houston\, and on movie soundtracks like “Taxi Driver”\, “Blade Runner”\, “Heaven Can Wait”\, “Sea of Love”\, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”\, “Toy Story 2”\, and “Monsters Inc.”. He performed the Schumann Concerto with the Hamilton Symphony on the Disney Channel\, was selected for the Student Latin All-Star Band\, and was chosen as one of two pianists world-wide entering the Henry Mancini Institute Program. Mahesh won the Most Outstanding Rhythm Performer at the Monterey Jazz Festival\, and was selected to tour with an all-star jazz band in Japan. Mahesh won the first place Rotary Club Competition\, won the Best Jazz Music Award at the Fullerton Jazz Festival\, and won first place in the Charlie Dolo Coker Competition. Mahesh won first place in the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts Talent Search\, won first place in the John Coltrane Competition\, and won first place in the Omega Psy Phi Competition. Mahesh was a finalist in the Emerging Young Artist Competition\, and the 2002 Music Center Spotlight Awards. Mahesh is a 3 time consecutive performance winner at the Hamilton Music Academy\, performed in the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship\, and won the IAJE Conference Outstanding Achievement Award given by pianist Billy Taylor. Mahesh has worked with many jazz greats\, and has appeared on four recordings. Jazz DJ Chuck Niles calls Mahesh “The Charlie Parker of Sri Lanka”. Mahesh has performed at the Hollywood Bowl\, Paramount Studios\, Universal Music Productions\, and Sony Studios. Mahesh has studied with Shelly Berg\, Buddy Collette\, and Jeffrey Lavner at the Colburn School of Music. Mahesh has composed a concerto for both orchestra and piano. \nAndrew Synowiec is a session guitarist who’s playing can be heard on dozens of TV and film soundtracks\, and multiple artists’ recordings. Andrew is one of LA’s busiest session guitarists and can be heard on blockbuster movies like “Frozen”\, the NFL Theme Song on Fox TV\, billboard hits\, and incredibly diverse spectrum of artists from Michael Buble to Rob Zombie. Andrew has contributed to records selling over 10\,000\,000 copies world-wide\, and garnered 17 combined Grammy Nominations. Andrew has played around the globe from Madison Square Garden in New York to the Blue Note Jazz Club in Tokyo Japan. Andrew has appeared on ABC\, NBC\, CBS\, Fox\, MTV\, VH1\, and performed with recording artists from Indie-Electro Innovator M83 to country music star Jo Dee Messina\, to the LA Philharmonic. Andrew recently played on Barbara Streisand’s “Encore” and the acclaimed motion picture “The Secret Life of Pets”. Andrew has played on everything from 10 second jingles to Grammy winning records. For over the last decade Andrew has played on over 165 recordings. \nBassist\, composer\, teacher\, and clinician Chris Colangelo is a master on the instrument. Chris’s sound is full\, fat\, and sassy with understated swagger. Chris majored in jazz performance at Rowan University. Born in a musical family\, Gary’s parents were both pianists. Gary played with his mother Carol and her trio at the London House in Chicago\, and with his father Larry Novak\, a famous Chicago pianist\, at Mr. Kelly’s Nightclub at a very early age. In high school Gary played with jazz greats Buddy DeFranco\, Joe Williams\, Milt Hinton\, Kenny Burrell\, Barney Kessel\, and Louie Bellson. At the age of 19 Gary moved to LA and has worked with Maynard Ferguson\, Brandon Fields\, Michael McDonald\, Natalie Cole\, David Sanborn\, and Anita Baker. Gary has toured with Lee Ritenour\, the GRP All-Stars\, George Benson\, Chick Corea’s Electric Band II\, Bob Berg\, Allan Holdsworth\, and Alanis Morissette. DESCRIPTION:This youthful sextet includes Kirsten Edkins on saxophone\, Clay Jenkins on trumpet\, Steve Cotter on guitar\, Dave Hamm on organ\, Ben Shepherd on bass\, and Ana Barreiro on drums. \nSaxophonist Kirsten Edkins performs on NBC’s “The Voice”\, with actor and vocalist Seth McFarland\, and with jazz great Bill Holman. Kirsten’s alto sax playing is inspired by Cannonball Adderley\, Charlie Parker\, and Kenny Garrett. Her tenor sax playing is inspired by John Coltrane\, Rich Perry\, Joe Henderson\, and Eddie Harris. Edkins is a graduate of Eastman School of Music where she studied with saxophonist Walt Weiskopf\, and saxophone educator Ray Ricker. She has also studied with saxophonist Bob Sheppard. Kirsten has played with jazz greats Tim Hagans\, Gary Smulyan\, Joe Labarbera\, John Daversa\, Clay Jenkins\, Larry Koonse\, Bill Cunliffe\, Bernie Dresel\, Wayne Bergeron\, and Pete Christlieb. Edkins has performed on American Idol\, and played with Pharrel Williams\, Smokey Robinson\, Stevie Wonder\, Christina Aguilera\, Catherine McPhee\, Adam Levine\, Carrie Underwood\, John Legend\, Natalie Cole\, and many others. Edkins has recently recorded her first album entitled “Art and Soul” featuring her original compositions with the groovy influences of guitarist John Scofield\, and saxophonist Joe Lovano\, and straight ahead jazz tunes. The recording was rated among the top 15 jazz albums\, and received media praise from Down Beat and Jazziz Magazines\, Japanese Jazz Life Magazine\, and AllAboutJazz.com. Kirsten maintains a private studio and teaches at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music\, and Occidental College in Eagle Rock. Kirsten’s vigor and poise comes out in her touch and tone that is both delightful and charming. Edkins can stretch out in an engaging and exuberant way with a sound all her own. \nTrumpeter Clay Jenkins has toured and recorded with the Stan Kenton\, Count Basie\, Buddy Rich\, Harry James\, Jim Widner\, and Clayton-Hamilton Big Bands\, and played with over 50 jazz greats. Clay has made 12 recordings as a leader/co-leader. Jenkins received his Bachelor Degree from North Texas State University\, and a Masters Degree from USC. Clay studied with top trumpet teachers including John Haynie\, James Stamp\, Boyde Hood\, and Uan Rasey. Cotter has recorded and toured with Steve Tyrell\, Bobby Caldwell\, Joey DeFrancesco\, and recorded and performed with Jimmy Smith\, Jimmy Cobb\, Bette Midler\, Lou Soloff\, Benny Maupin\, John Pisano\, Bill Perkins\, Dale Fielder\, Jane Getz\, Bob Maize\, Ernie Watts\, and Ramon Banda. \nOrganist Dave Hamm is a versatile LA keyboardist who has appeared on 40 recordings\, has toured and performed with a dozen different groups\, and over three dozen diverse music artists playing pop\, rock\, jazz\, hip hop\, and country. Hamm began playing the piano at the age of four\, and studied at Citrus College and Cal State Bakersfield. Dave has twice received an award as a member of the best jazz combo\, and the top pianist at the Pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival at UC Berkeley. \nBassist Ben Shepherd from New Zealand has played the bass since he was seven years old. Ben studied at the California Institute of Arts with jazz bass greats Charlie Haden\, Alphonso Johnson\, and Darek Oles. Shepherd has played with David Archuleta\, Lee Ritenour\, Mike Keneally\, Mike Stern\, Billy Childs\, Patrice Rushen\, Bob Sheppard\, John Beasley\, and the Monk Orchestra\, and many others. \nDrummer and percussionist Ana Barreiro from Brazil plays pop\, gospel\, funk\, jazz\, Latin\, and Brazilian music. Ana received a performance degree from Berklee College of Music as a scholarship recipient. Barreiro has studied for her Masters Degree and worked as a teachers assistant in jazz studies at USC under jazz drummer great Peter Erskine. DESCRIPTION:The quintet is led by Joe Labarbera on drums\, Clay Jenkins on trumpet\, Rob Lockart on saxophones\, Bill Cunliffe on piano\, and Jonathan Richards on bass. Drummer\, composer\, and arranger Joe Labarbera has played with two dozen of the finest jazz groups all over the world. Joe was a member of Bill Evans last trio\, and Chuck Mangione and Joe Farrells Quartets. Labarbera was formally educated at Berklee School of Music\, and was mentored by jazz greats John LaPorta\, Charlie Mariano\, Herb Pomeroy and Alan Dawson. Joe began his professional career with Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd\, and has played with dozens of jazz greats including Bill Evans and Tony Bennett. Labarbera’s drumming talents\, insights\, and experience allow for his group to play rhythmically and free throughout their performances\, and possesses the maturity to play both styles and splice them together when necessary. Joe’s musical family includes his brother Pat Labarbera who is an accomplished saxophonist\, and brother John Labarbera\, trumpeter\, arranger\, composer\, and leader of a very prominent big band. Labarbera has taught at the California Institute for the Arts for 25 years\, is on the faculty of the Bud Shank Jazz Workshop in Port Townsend\, WA\, is a visiting artist at UNLV (Las Vegas)\, has served on the National Endowment for the Arts council in Washington D.C.\, and has been a guest performer and lecturer at many colleges. In 1999\, Joe along with Tom Warrington\, Larry Koonse\, and Clay Jenkins formed “Jazz Compass”\, an independent recording company dedicated to the kind of creative music close to his heart. The label has made 25 recordings to date\, and Labarbera has played on over 40 recordings in his career spanning back to the early 70’s. \nTrumpeter Clay Jenkins has toured and recorded with the big bands of Stan Kenton\, Count Basie\, Buddy Rich\, Harry James\, Jim Widner\, Clayton-Hamilton\, has played with over 50 jazz greats\, and has made 12 recordings as a leader/co-leader. Lockart has appeared on 30 recordings in his career. \nPianist\, composer\, and arranger Bill Cunliffe\, known for his swinging\, soulful lyricism on piano\, and creative inventiveness as an accomplished composer and arranger of jazz\, is described as being in the modern jazz mainstream. Bill discovered classical and jazz music at an early age in the 60’s and 70’s\, and is drawn to any music with a hip harmony and great melody. Cunliffe loved listening to the music of the Fifth Dimension\, Burt Bacharach\, and Herb Alpert. Bill grew up in Massachusetts\, and played in a rock ‘n’ roll group in college\, attending Wesleyan University. His first listening to pianist Oscar Peterson made him become a jazz player overnight. Bill is a graduate of Duke University where he studied with the great pianist Mary Lou Williams\, and at Eastman School of Music. Cunliffe has taught at USC\, Temple University\, Vail Jazz Institute\, Skidmore Jazz Institute\, Music Institute in Hollywood\, Cal State Northridge\, Central State University in Ohio\, is an associate professor of music at Cal State Fullerton\, and is composer in residence at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena. Bill began his career as the pianist and arranger for Buddy Rich\, and toured with Frank Sinatra. Cunliffe has played with Ray Brown\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Benny Golson\, Woody Shaw\, James Moody\, Buell Niedlinger\, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, the Clayton Brothers\, and flutist Holly Hofmann. In 1989 Bill won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Piano Award and $10\,000\, and was monetarily rewarded from the National Endowment of Arts. Cunliffe has been nominated for 3 Grammys\, and 2 Emmys as a composer\, and arranger\, and has been nominated or won 11 awards in total\, including a Down Beat Award. Bill recorded the soundtrack for Kareem Abdul Jabbars’ documentary film about jazz and basketball in Harlem in the 1930’s. Bill has published 6 jazz instructional books which include for big band and choral music. Cunliffe has recorded on 25 CD’s\, and won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement of “West Side Story”\, on Resonance Records Big Band paying tribute to Oscar Peterson. Bill has been a member of the Joe Labarbera Quintet since the early 90’s\, recording several well received albums. Cunliffe’s colleagues describe him as charming\, witty\, warm\, and humble. \nBassist\, composer\, and teacher Johnathan Richards is a student of the USC music program. Jonathan has studied and recorded at California Institute of the Arts\, and plays regularly with many of LA’s best young jazz players in a variety of groups. DESCRIPTION:Vocalist Ernie Andrews is a legendary jazz artist who’s career spans over 70 years. Andrews began singing in a church choir as a youth\, and made his first recordings while still in high school. Ernie was influenced by vocalists Billy Eckstine\, and Al Hibbler\, and shares a style with Joe Williams\, but Ernie’s sound is truly original and all his’ own. Ernie performed during the post WWII Central Avenue music scene in LA among the many jazz giants of the 1940’s & 1950’s. Andrews has performed or recorded with the Harry James Orchestra\, the Capp-Pierce Juggernaut band for over 25 years\, Kenny Burrell\, Snooky Young\, the Gene Harris-Philip Morris All Star Super Band\, Kansas City’s Jay McShann and the Paris All Stars\, the Harper Brothers Band\, and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. In the documentary film “Blues for Central Avenue”\, Ernie narrates and walks you through this historic part of LA’s early jazz and blues music scene. Ernie has recorded 22 singles between 1945 and 1965\, has recorded 15 albums as a leader\, and has appeared on over 125 recordings in his career. Ernie’s songbook is the music of Ellington & Basie\, and his powerful\, soulful sound flows when it comes to jazz\, rhythm\, blues\, and art. Ernie feels the music. \nSaxophonist Rickey Woodard spent 7 years with the Ray Charles Band\, has played and recorded with Frank Capp’s Juggernaut Band\, the Jeannie & Jimmy Cheathams Sweet Baby Blues Band\, and is a current member of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Rickey has appeared on 40 jazz recordings\, 12 as a leader/co-leader. Woodard plays with great power\, soul\, and command of his instrument. Rickey plays all styles of music with great finesse\, ease\, and precision\, a true saxophone master. \nPianist Lanny Hartley is a conductor\, composer\, and studied at Indiana University. He is an accomplished musician who has played with Jon Hendricks\, Lou Rawls\, Linda Hopkins\, Ernestine Anderson\, Thelma Houston\, the Fifth Dimension\, Joe Tex\, Syreeta Wright\, Al Wilson\, and David Clayton-Thomas. Lanny has directed the live productions “Ain’t Misbehavin”\, “Tracks”\, “Late Great Ladies of Blues and Jazz”\, “The Life of Dinah Washington”\, and “The Della Reese Tour”. Hartley has appeared in the TV movie “Sinatra”\, the motion picture “Harlem Nights”\, and the ABC TV series “Soul Man”. \nBassist Richard Simon is an educator\, producer\, clinician\, and conductor who has performed with over 75 different artists. Richard has written and performed the jazz production entitled “Poor Richards All Man Act Plus One”. Simon has served as the program director of “Jazz America” in LA\, co-founded by the great Buddy Collette. This after school jazz instruction program teaches middle and high school students in the Hollywood area about the music of Louis Armstrong\, Duke Ellington\, Benny Carter\, and Mary Lou Williams. Richard was mentored by the great bassist Red Calendar\, and woodwinds master Buddy Collette. \nJazz drummer and actor Fritz Wise has played and recorded with Johnny Hammond\, Nate Morgan\, Horace Tapscott\, Gary Bias\, Azar Lawrence\, Curtis Fuller\, Kenny Burrell\, Harold Land\, The Temptations\, and Lou Donaldson. Fritz has appeared on 15 recordings\, and plays with a powerful and swinging style on anything from funk to jazz\, and everything in between. Wise has been performing and recording for over 40 years\, and comments that he is truly married to the music for life.

DESCRIPTION:The trio includes Glenn Cashman on saxophones and organ\, Ron Eschete on guitar\, and Kendall Kay on drums. Glenn Cashman is a jazz saxophonist & organist\, composer\, arranger\, and educator who leads the world-class Southland Nonet Jazz Ensemble that consists of several Kenton alumni woodwind and brass musicians. This group is a reminder of the Miles Davis Birth of the Cool Band\, and Gerry Mulligans Tentet. Glenn also leads the Southland Big Band\, and has made recordings with both groups. Cashman’s free-wheeling\, compositional approach to the saxophone and improvisation is inspired by Joe Henderson\, Wayne Shorter\, and John Coltrane. Glenn’s compositions are influenced by Coltrane\, Shorter\, Ivan Lins\, Gil Evans\, Igor Stravinski\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Bela Bartok\, and Burt Bacharach. Cashman is bi-costal\, teaching as an associate professor of music at Colgate University\, and performs and records in the Southern California area as well. Glenn has taught at Cal State Fullerton and Towson University. In 2017 Cashman will have served 10 years as the Artistic Director with friend and producer Eric Fetterer of the Muckenthaler Jazz Festival in Fullerton. Glenn has recorded with Kenny Barron\, Ray Drummond\, Ben Riley\, Tom Ranier\, Bob Sheppard\, Bob McChesney\, and has appeared on 4 recordings as a member of the Luther Hughes’ Cannonball/Coltrane Project. Cashman has performed or recorded with over 60 major artists in jazz clubs and concert venues across the U.S. and internationally. \nRon Eschete is a consummate master of the seven string jazz guitar. As one of the finest guitarists of main-stream jazz Ron was influenced by blues greats B.B. King\, Muddy Waters\, and Jimmy Reed\, as well as jazz greats Jim Hall\, Howard Roberts\, and Wes Montgomery. Eschete has recorded 13 albums as a leader\, and was a member of the Gene Harris quartet for 16 years\, appearing on 12 recordings. Ron has appeared on a total of 70 recordings in his esteemed career. Eschete is at home with be-bop\, ballads\, and blues with a sophistication\, grace\, dignity\, and deft nimbleness that has been compared to the sound of Bill Evans on the guitar. Playing professionally since high school\, Ron has played with Buddy Greco\, Dave Pike\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Sarah Vaughn\, Diana Krall\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Milt Jackson\, and Ray Brown. Eschete has recorded 4 CD’s with his own trio plus a solo guitar recording. Eschete has played and toured major venues from N.Y. to S.F.\, and has taught at colleges and universities for over 25 years\, plus authoring 3 guitar books. In his most recent recording\, “Jassemblage”\, Theo choses well known jazz compositions from the last half century by Thelonious Monk\, Horace Silver\, Joe Zawinul\, Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Duke Ellington\, Paul Desmond\, Bobby Timmons\, James Brown\, and Oliver Nelson. A native of New York\, Saunders has appeared on 50 jazz recordings\, 8 as a leader/co-leader\, worked with over 130 jazz artists\, and written over 100 compositions. Theo has toured 4 continents and more than 20 countries\, playing in over 30 prestigious jazz festivals\, concert halls\, and jazz venues. Saunders has directed Opera and dance productions\, cabaret singers\, and musical theatre. Ranelin has played with a half dozen different jazz ensembles and appears in the film “Monterey Jazz: 40 Legendary Years” filmed by Clint Eastwood with other jazz greats. Phil follows in the musical tradition of master trombonist J.J. Johnson\, playing modern\, melodically rich improvisations with a round singing sound. \nChuck Manning is a jazz saxophonist and semi-conductor process engineer at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Altadena\, CA. Chuck has been active in the LA area for over the past 25 years playing with the LA Jazz Quartet\, and many of the best jazz musicians in LA. Manning’s style is original\, bold\, and rhythmic on ballads\, and post-bop jazz. Chuck always plays brilliantly\, understated\, edgy\, and with a smart inventiveness. Manning has played or recorded with over 120 jazz artists. Chuck’s recording “Notes from the Real” has a rare sense of integrity and conviction\, with a style shared by saxophone greats Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter. \nLouis Van Taylor is a multi-talented musician who plays several woodwind instruments\, percussion\, and keyboards. Louis has played with over 2 dozen jazz\, R&B\, soul\, and pop groups\, and appeared on 15 recordings. Taylor is best known for his funky horn work with Kool & the Gang\, and has worked with Ray Charles for over 20 years. Louis is an actor and has taught jazz at USC School of Music. Taylor is CEO and President at Rolyatrprd Music in LA. \nLA native bassist Henry Franklin\, known as the “Skipper” has 24 recordings as a leader\, and appeared on over 150 recordings. Henry has recorded on 2 gold records with Hugh Masakela and Stevie Wonder\, and has played with dozens of jazz greats at clubs\, and festivals across the USA and internationally. Heavily influenced by Hampton Hawes and Harold Land\, Henry also studied with bassists Al McKibbon\, and George Morrow. Franklin’s earliest playing was with Roy Ayers\, Bill Henderson\, Carl Burnett\, and Elmo Jones. Henry was part of the hot jazz scene in LA from the late 1950’s and held his own with the likes of Ornette Coleman\, Don Cherry\, Billy Higgins\, and Scott Lafaro\, Franklin has performed with jazz greats Pharoh Sanders\, Joe Williams\, Sonny Rollins\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Sonny Fortune\, and Milt Jackson. Henry considers himself a bebopper for life and strives to do the best for his love of jazz\, America’s only art form. \nDrummer Kendall Kay studied at North Texas State University and has been a member of the LA Jazz Quartet\, the Acoustic Jazz Quartet\, and the Theo Saunders Sextet. Kendall swings with a great sense of time\, always playing with a solid\, tasteful\, and calm style. Kendall has performed or recorded with dozens of jazz artists\, and is also a member of the Ron Eschete Trio\, and the Peak Experience Jazz Ensemble. Kendall has appeared on over 70 recordings.

DESCRIPTION:Denny Zeitlin is a 21st century renaissance man. A native of Chicago Denny combines a dual career as one of the most imaginative and audacious jazz pianists\, and a practicing clinical professor of psychiatry at UCSF with an active private medical practice. Zeitlin has recorded over 35 critically acclaimed albums\, written over 100 original compositions\, and has twice been a first place winner of “Down Beat” Magazines International Jazz Critics Poll. “Jazz Times” Magazine recognizes Denny’s creative output over the past 50 years\, placing him at jazz’s creative zenith. Zeitlin began improvising at age 2\, composing before elementary school\, and studied classical music at the age of 6. In 8th grade he switched to jazz and by high school was playing professionally. In college Denny was playing with jazz greats like Ira Sullivan\, Johnny Griffin\, Wes Montgomery\, Joe Farrell\, Wilbur Ware\, Bob Cranshaw\, and others. Zeitlin credits Billy Taylor\, and George Russell as his mentors\, and Bill Evans as an early supporter who recorded Denny’s composition “Quiet Now” as the title track of a 1970 album. Denny sites as early influences George Shearing\, Art Tatum\, Dave Brubeck\, Lennie Tristano\, Oscar Peterson\, Ray Brown\, Bud Powell\, Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Charlie Parker\, Horace Silver\, Bill Evans\, and Herbie Hancock. Denny began recording in 1963 with Johnny Hammond at Columbia Records while studying medicine at John Hopkins School of Medicine. Zeitlin first recorded with Jeremy Steig\, Ben Riley\, and Ben Tucker. Later\, Denny recorded four trio albums with Charlie Haden and Jerry Granelli. Denny interned at UCSF followed by a psychiatric residency. Critic Leonard Feather called Zeitlin the most versatile young pianist to come to prominence in the early 1960’s. Jazz historian Ted Gioia said\, “Denny has assimilated the breakthroughs of the previous decade from impressionism of Bill Evans to the free-fall explorations of Ornette Coleman\, blending them into a personal style that anticipated the next 15 years of keyboard advances. Zeitlin stands out from the crowd for the unbridled creativity of his work\, the richness of his harmonic pallete\, and the sheer beauty of his piano tone. Through the late 60’s and most of the 70’s Denny integrated the electric keyboard\, synthesizer\, sound altering devices with acoustic instruments working in multiple music genres. Zeitlin has written music for “Sesame Street”\, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”\, and has played colleges\, clubs\, festivals\, and concerts internationally. Denny has appeared with jazz greats like Joe Henderson\, Herbie Hancock\, Pat Metheny\, Tony Williams\, Bobby Hutcherson\, John Patitiucci\, John Ambercrombie\, Marian McPartland\, David Grisman\, Paul Winter\, David Freisen\, Matt Wilson\, Buster Williams\, and many others. For over 30 years Zeitlin has focused on acoustic music\, recording some 22 albums. Denny has recorded solo\, trio\, and electro-acoustic records. His latest recording is a solo concert exploring classic compositions of Wayne Shorter. Zeitlin is a Steinway piano artist. Denny has combined his medical and jazz disciplines in a lecture and workshop entitled “Unlocking the Creative Impulse: The Psychology of Improvisation”. Denny has a passion for both of his careers where communication is paramount. Zeitlin says there has to be a depth of empathy that allows one to really inhabit the other persons’ world. It comes out as a collaborative journey in both settings. Denny’s piano playing has extraordinary range\, is electrifying in depth and intensity\, hypnotic in its flow and sweep\, and perfection itself. Zeitlin plays with a boldness\, power\, and skill that is like a profound philosophical endeavor. DESCRIPTION:The Phil Norman Tentet is the best of mid-size jazz bands that finds new and illuminating ways to perform cool\, modern\, west coast jazz. Performing authentic jazz for over 15 years the Tentet combines sounds from bands like Miles Davis “Birth of the Cool” and west coast jazz bands of the 50’s\, and explores new ideas from many modern day arrangers and composers like Bob Florence\, Dave Pell\, Alan Broadbent\, Roger Neumann\, Kim Richmond\, Tom Kubis\, Dan Higgins and others. Phil Norman’s idea as the tentet leader is to have a small group instrumental sound that uses different tempos\, arrangers\, and soloists playing jazz standards and original compositions. The Phil Norman Tentet recently released their 8th CD entitled “Then and Now”. It is a collection of 12 of the most well-known jazz compositions played with a contemporary sound. The recording is currently receiving top airplay of the most recent recorded CDs across the nation according to “Jazz Week”. Vocalist Anna Mjoll will be accompanied by Tom Ranier on piano\, Chuck Berghofer on bass\, and Ray Brinker on drums. \nJazz singer Anna Mjoll\, native of Iceland\, has performed with Julio Iglesias and co-wrote and performed three songs with CJ Vanston in the film “For Your Consideration”. Anna has recorded two C.D.’s\, “The Shadow of Your Smile” and “Christmas Jazz Mazz”. Anna’s sweet voice is light and jazzy\, and her stage presence brings out a humorous touch as she likes to interact in dialogue with her audience. Her style is quite distinct and highly personal\, and all her own. Mjoll’s appeal and melodic style evokes resemblances to Peggy Lee\, Astrud Gilberto\, Julie London\, Blossom Dearie\, and Madeline Peyroux. Anna interprets the Great American Song Book with the best of todays’ jazz singers in a very entertaining live performance. \nMulti-instrumentalist Tom Ranier has played piano and multiple woodwinds as  a leader and sideman on over 150 recordings since the mid 1970’s. Tom has four recordings as a leader and has been prominent in film\, TV\, and the music recording industry for over 40 years. Ranier has played and written music for the Grammy\, Academy\, Emmy\, and Golden Globe shows. Tom has won awards for artists that include Barbara Streisand\, Michael Finestein\, Christina Aguilera\, Joe Pass\, Placido Domingo\, Barry Manilow\, Natalie Cole\, and others. Tom’s style as a pianist and jazz artist mixes Bud Powell’s complexity\, Oscar Peterson’s ardent swing\, and Bill Evans exploratory harmonies. Ranier lists Benny Goodman and Charlie Parker as his main influences. Tom has played with 100’s of great music artists\, and enjoys projecting his thoughts and feelings deep from within when improvising in live performances. Ranier has done studio work for many TV and movie soundtracks\, and has worked extensively for Disney and CBS. Tom takes pride and enjoys studio work that he feels keep him fresh and a better musician because different projects and composers broaden his scope. Ranier has taught jazz composition at Fullerton College and has contributed to several successful school recordings. Tom has taught in the jazz program at UCLA under guitarist Kenny Burrell. Ranier has authored a jazz education book titled “Piano in the Rhythm Section”. \nBassist Chuck Berghofer has a distinguished career as a jazz player\, studio musician\, and work in TV and films. He is known for his huge rich tone\, and sense of relaxed power on the bass. Chuck has worked at the famous Shelly’s Manne Hole\, and Donte’s Jazz Club as a house musician for many years. Berghofer’s bass influences include Leroy Vinegar\, Paul Chambers\, Ray Brown\, Scott Lafaro\, and Red Mitchell. Chuck has played with the Skinny Ennis Orchestra\, Bobby Troup\, Pete Jolly’s Trio\, and most of the best west coast jazz players since the 1960’s. He has worked with names like Zoot Sims\, Ray Charles\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Stan Getz\, Peggy Lee\, Gerry Mulligan\, Art Pepper\, The Everly Brothers\, Elvis Presley\, Frank Sinatra\, Mel Torme\, Sarah Vaughn\, Merle Haggard\, Glenn Campbell\, Seth McFarland\, and a long list of others. Chuck has worked on over 400 film soundtracks\, and won the National Academy of Recording Art & Sciences Award as the Most Valuable Bass Player 4 years in a row. \nDrummer Ray Brinker\, graduate of North Texas State University\, and a member of the 1 o’clock Jazz Lab Band\, Ray started out with the Maynard Ferguson Band. Brinker’s longest stint is playing for over 20 years with the Tierney Sutton Band\, for whom he has co-arranged and recorded 9 CD’s. The band has been nominated 4 years in a row for a Grammy as Best Jazz Vocal Album. Brinker has performed or recorded with over 40 diverse jazz and music greats\, and has played on a dozen TV/film soundtracks. \nSaturday November 19th at 7:00pm the Anna Mjoll/Tom Ranier Quartet\, four world-class musicians performing at Pete Carlsons’ Jazz for Jazz Lovers. The quartet includes Jon Mayer on piano\, Doug Webb on saxophone\, Bruce Lett on bass\, and Roy McCurdy on drums. \nA native of New York\, Jon Mayer studied at Manhattan Music & Art High School\, and Manhattan School of Music. Jon has been on the jazz scene since the late 50’s\, and was influenced early on by Charlie Parker. Mayer played with Kenny Dorham\, and Tony Scott in New York City\, and eventually recorded with saxophone greats Jackie Mclean and John Coltrane. Jon played in Paris\, and at the Blue Note Club in New York City working with Chet Baker\, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra\, Dionne Warwick\, Sarah Vaughn\, and the Manhattan Transfer. Mayer later joined Les McCann’s Magic Band\, and has played with Ron Carter\, Billy Higgins\, and Ernie Watts. Jon’s influences on piano are Bud Powell\, Bill Evans\, Red Garland\, Wynton Kelly\, Carl Perkins\, and Horace Silver. Mayer plays with great emotional range\, feeling\, and a keen sense of melodicism. Mayer has a supple touch and relaxed rhythmic feel so he tries to play fast\, clean\, and go for the pretty notes. Jon has 8 recordings as a leader\, and his compositions have been recorded by Les McCann\, Nancy Wilson\, Ernie Watts\, and Jackie Ryan. \nTalented saxophonist Doug Webb has been playing music since he was 8 years old\, and currently plays 24 different woodwind instruments. Doug is a graduate of Berklee College of Music\, and has played and recorded with Horace Silver\, Freddie Hubbard\, Stanley Clarke\, Quincy Jones\, Rod Stewart\, Art Garfunkel\, Carly Simon\, Queen Latifah\, Cher\, Bonnie Raitt\, Poncho Sanchez\, and Vicky Carr. Webb has played in the big bands of Dennis Miller’s TV Show\, the Jimmy Cleveland Orchestra\, and both the Doc Severinsen and Bill Holman Big Bands. Doug has recorded music for 100’s of movies\, TV shows\, and jazz dates including “Family Guy”\, “The Simpsons”\, “Mystic River”\, “Million Dollar Baby”\, “Jersey Boys”\, and “Gran Torino”. Doug has 16 recordings as a leader\, and his high-energy style blends saxophone influences of John Coltrane\, Sonny Rollins\, Hank Mobley\, and Joe Henderson. Doug is also a master teacher for many jazz students. \nBassist Bruce Lett is on the jazz faculty of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State University in Long Beach. Bruce has played with Gerry Mulligan\, Alfonse Mouzon\, Nancy Wilson\, Ernie Watts\, Bill Holman\, Terry Gibbs\, and at the premier of Bette Midler’s show “For the Boys”. Lett has recorded commercials\, TV soundtracks\, industrial films\, and been an active studio musician for the shows “Moonlighting”\, “Beverly Hills 90210”\, Fox TV\, “After Breakfast”\, “Dear God”\, the TV mini-series “Titanic”\, and the PBS children’s show “Wasted”. Bruce has recorded for many major corporations\, the military\, and the California Radio Network. \nDrummer Roy McCurdy is best known for his drumming power with the Cannonball/Adderley Quintet for over a decade. Roy has performed on nearly 40 jazz recordings\, and played with numerous jazz greats that include the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet\, the Mangione Brothers\, Bobby Timmons\, Betty Carter\, Sonny Rollins\, Count Basie\, Wes Montgomery\, Ella\, Sarah\, Carmen\, Joe Williams\, Herbie Hancock\, Oscar Peterson\, Bud Powell\, Art Pepper\, Milt Jackson\, J.J. Johnson\, Ray Brown\, and Blood\, Sweat\, & Tears. McCurdy attended Eastman School of Music\, and early on played with Roy Eldrigde and Eddie “Clean Head” Vinson. Roy is a professor in the jazz studies department of the Thornton School of Music at USC in Los Angeles. Roy’s drum influences include Louie Bellson\, Shelly Manne\, Sam Woodyard\, Buddy Rich\, Papa Joe Jones\, and the big bands of Ellington\, Lunceford\, and Hampton. \nDon’t miss this all-star group Saturday November 12th at 7:00pm at Pete Carlson’s in Palm Desert.
